No clue about Vaughn but we won't be taking a TE in the 2nd round. People need to move on from that.

Yep. Even the little jokes about it has run its course. What's done is done. People will one day be happy as hell that we have a guy like Escobar on our roster and that we won't have to worry about that position after Witten is gone or steadily declines.

You lost me at the TE comment....it adds no value to a good question....:)

If a QB is there, take him, no matter what.
I think they like what they see in Vaughan, but still need to see much more. They kept a 3rd QB, so must like him. Or they really wanted a 3rd string in case Romo did go down, they had someone familiar with the system, as opposed to bringing in someone at the last minute again.

well 2nd round is a prime spot for TE's I hear

It's way too early to know whether Vaughn has potential or not. He was an undrafted free agent so he's battling some long odds. I wouldn't call any young developmental QB a wasted roster spot because the Cowboys obviously saw enough in him to keep him around to develop. We'll find out more about him next summer and see if he sticks around another year or they move on from him.

I think the pair of them will be around in the second or even later. Do not see first round top of draft type QBs.

Yeah, me neither. I can see Hundley going 3rd round or later. Just never know. Would be nice to pick up a QB with some pedigree (Stephen McGee was not) to eventually take over for Romo. There seems to be some decent prospects in this year's crop of QBs, and the Cowboys would be wise to start thinking long term this offseason.

It's the one big hurdle for the future of the team, if you believe in the Jason Garrett era. We can't keep counting on Tony Romo to play at this level. The next QB must be found.

If he's on the roster, they must think he's on a path to backup QB at the very minimum, with an outside chance of starting at some point. He's an expensive luxury this season, with our need for roster spots on defense, so they must like him.

I'm kinda curious what the Ranch thinks about this guy.. I've heard zero about him since training camp. If a guy like Hundley or Petty is available in the 2nd does Jerry say we're set at QB lets get another TE.. We struck free agent gold with Romo is Vaughn being groomed?

You hope he plays out but I'd pull the trigger if a qb like that is available,

Maybe he could be the QB of the future, maybe not. These developmental guys you keep around for about three years and then make a wager.

I could see us taking another guy in third day of the draft this year in rounds 4/5. Rakeem Cato is pretty intriguing to me, reminds me a lot of Russell Wilson.

Something we completely agree on. And it's the hardest position to fill, because the most important trait for a QB is his ability to process information quickly. Quicker than anybody has to do it in college. And you can't find out if a guy has that or not without getting him up to speed on your offense--which can take a year or two--and then giving him enough snaps. It's almost a crap-shoot once you get over the level of a guy's throwing mechanics.

What we've got going for us is that it's a good team to learn the position around on offense right now, if we manage to get the right guy in there.

I think the question was what do you think. Not the standard Go Cowboys answer of the team must like him.

Really, unbelievable luck.
I mean, the odds must be astronomical.

I think they knew what they were doing..they made no attempt to bring in QB help that year.. Management tanked.

To answer the original OP's question, he looked interesting enough in preseason, but it is very much a stretch to say he's a QB of the future. Even Romo had a few sparks in his first year preseason.

I think they even had to win a coin flip with the Rams--both were 2-14.
But the odds that the year Manning would have the neck surgery, that they would be bad enough (I mean, the players still tried to win), and that the best QB prospect in 20 years just happened to be in that one draft...well, that's uncanny good fortune.

Agreed, but I think defense is a bigger need at this time. Plus, I don't think we have enough information on what the coaches think of Vaughn to say one way or the other if we are in desperate need at QB.

True but Curtis Painter, Dan Orlovsky and out of retirement Kerry Collins won't win many games..they were smart.. Reminds me when David Robinson got hurt and the Spurs got Tim Duncan..

Yes, if they have the chance to draft a QB that they are sold on, then do it, but don't just draft on to draft one.
Depends on where. I'm not taking one in the first three rounds, considering Romo still playing at a high level and all the needs on this defense.

We'd be better off building a team capable of carrying a rookie QB should it come to that, than drafting a QB and hoping he can come in and carry things when Romo retires.

And I'm of the belief that Vaughan is here because they think he's a player. You don't keep him on the roster if you don't think he's going to become a legit QB.
