I think the question was what do you think. Not the standard Go Cowboys answer of the team must like him.

I think the team must like him because of how they handle him. There's nothing 'Go Cowboys' about that. Either he's on the roster, or he's not. It's safe to assume they like the guys on the roster better than available guys not on the roster.

And that's the best way to give a sensible answer to the OP who was asking for an update on the player since what we all saw in camp. Since none of us have actually seen anything of him since then, the only data we've got to go on is from how the team has handled him on the roster when there have been times when they really needed a roster spot. Your own answer to the question didn't answer the question about what you think about Dustin Vaughan, at all. It was simply a related comment that I happen to agree with.

You can stop the pretense that you're carrying the flag for rational skeptics everywhere, by the way. Nobody buys it anymore.

That said, I'd like to see it be the case that not every exchange has to be an argument. I agree with you that QB is now a giant need for this team and that, whatever the team thinks of Vaughan that they're bothering to store him on the roster this season, him developing into a player is a really long shot at best. You can both hope a player develops and recognize it's a bad bet at the same time, and do it without wearing a Rowdy mask or a foam finger, as you like to say all the time.

The standard the team must like him since he's on the roster response. Well done.

Phil Costa was on the roster. Bill Nagy was on the roster. David Arkin was on the roster. Stephen McGee was on the roster. Brandon Weeden is on the roster right now. They must have liked them too. Who cares?

The best way to give a sensible answer is to actually answer the question or just say you don't know. He asked what you think of the player. But since you just blindly defend the team you're not capable of doing that. Hence the stock fan handbook response of "the team must like him, he's on the roster".

I need more data on Vaughn, so I don't know. What the team thinks means jack and squat to me.

Even Babe Laufenburg was a Cowboy QB under Jimmy Johnson until he came to his senses.

I doubt the Cowboys staff knows what they have in Vaughn, it is just way too early. I'm sure there are skill sets they see in him weather he can put it all together is something no one will know for a while.

I'm kinda curious what the Ranch thinks about this guy.. I've heard zero about him since training camp. If a guy like Hundley or Petty is available in the 2nd does Jerry say we're set at QB lets get another TE.. We struck free agent gold with Romo is Vaughn being groomed?

Put me down for future starter. He has the tangibles I like in a QB. Needs to be groomed.

You hit on a free agent QB once in a blue moon. The Cowboys got VERY lucky. Lightening rarely strikes twice. I'm still a guy who believes in pedigree at the QB spot.

They really like Vaughn, and they have good information that he'd never survive waivers. Hence, he's here.

If they hit on another Romo, that'd be like hitting the lottery twice. But we'll see.

Absolutely. The rationalizing that this could be the second time Dallas hits on an undrafted free agent QB that everyone else was wrong on is pretty much a statistical impossibility.

I agree with drafting a QB if one falls or one they really likes.

If Vaughn develops into a good backup or trade value then we have already succeeded. Isn't that what everyone wanted? Draft one and trade him for a high pick.....

Oh, I am against drafting Hundley from UCLA and I am a UCLA fan. He just doesn't have the pocket awarenss that I think is necessary to be successful in the NFL. He is the MOST sacked QB over the past 3 yrs! Holds on to the ball way too long when he should be running.

I like Vaughn but he lacks some of the tangibles that successful QBs tend to have (hand size, etc). I am interested in what the team ends up doing with him.

What i saw (admittedly limited snaps) in pre season was a guy who is scanning the field for the open guy and staying in the pocket ,things which Weeden is incapable of doing.

It has nothing to do with defending the team. I'm not even sure what connection you're making there. I think you're just making something up.

You say what the team thinks means 'jack squat' to you...that's ignorant. We've got a pretty good pro-scouting department whose job it is to evaluate players like Vaughan and options like him available on PSs and on the open market, so what they do or do not do as far as exposing him to other teams during the season is obviously relevant. It gives you a measure of how they have the player graded, which is about all we've got to go on since we haven't been able to see him on the field.

They elected to keep that QB3 spot filled when they had needs at other positions and dropped multiple other young players off the roster. Even players who had been contributing on game day. That's what we know about him, and that's why I referenced it.

It might be thin soup compared to your impressive 'we need to draft a QB to replace Tony Romo' offering, but I'm somehow ok with that.

I'll play along and act confused by your confusion.

The man asked what you think of Vaughn. Not the obvious of what the team must think. Hey, newsflash...he's on the roster. So the team team must think he's worth being on the roster. But they also thought a plethora of stiffs were worthy of being on the roster too so it doesn't mean anything one way or the other.

Spare me your review of our pro scouting department. It means nothing to me and doesn't pertain to the question asked of what do you think of the player.

Do you have an opinion? Or will you just defer to the team?

Check your manual.
