They'll probably regret it if they do trade him....Wentz is extremely overrated, injury prone, and non clutch....everything you don't want in a franchise QB....Foles took that team to where they've never been before.....they may realize they're trading the wrong one, although he may have more trade value than Bubblewrap does at this point.

Birds are doing this so they can franchise him and then trade him to the highest bidder. The tag will be worth $29M? IMO Foles should sign the tender just so the Birds cannot pull it back the last minute when a team is not willing to give up the ransom the birds would be expecting. Plus it would force them to make another move or two to fit him under the cap.

They won’t, I don’t think. Foles has buyout option anyway. If PHI does it, its to get the comp pick.

Smart move. Buys them time to see if Wentz is going to be 100% and will put them in a good bargaining position when the inevitable QB drama hits the league.

Still good regardless. Wentz is not the right QB for the Eagles. He may have an MVP season but look at Matty Ice and Cam Newton, they both lost in the SB. Foles is special and he shown it this year over and over again.

Eagles not keeping Foles and getting a king ransom for Wentz is why the Eagles will not reach another SB for a very long time.

They're picking it up so when he does the 2 million dollar buyout, they save cap space and then they'll immediately franchise him, per Shefter.

How does that work with his buyout? They franchise after he’s out of the contract and just roll the dice someone will trade something? What’s the point of the buyout if he’s still subject to a franchise tag?

The buyout with the astronomical 2019 cap number was Howie's gamble last summer when Nick was restructured. Gives Philly options. Basically if Nick isnt good in 2018, then decline the option. If he's pretty good, they pick it up and see if he buys out. And then if he's still a hot commodity, this ensues:

They pick up his option because they know he'll buy out, which saves them cap space. They then tag him. Nick buys out, because he knows the tag will get him much more than the option does. Worst case scenario they just drop the franchise when the draft comes along, still save the buyout money on the cap and nothing changed. But if even 2 teams wanted him, one is willing to give up a 7 to ensure they get him and the other doesnt? a 6? What if there's 3 teams that were interested, is a 5 so much to ask? Basically anything more than a 5 and it was worth it, as they'd probably get a 3 from compensatory in 2020.

The only drawback to Philly is they can't franchise Brandon Graham, but he wants to be here so if they were going to pay him they wouldn't need it.

Thanks. Makes sense. Will be fun to see it play out.

Obligatory, “they could also trade Wentz.”

The Eagles will have to make a few moves because they are currently sitting at $18 million over the cap. Is Foles $20 million option or $29 million franchise even counted as part of their cap right now?

I'm split on the QBs, I have non-football personal reasons that I really like them both as people. As QBs, Nick makes more sense logically to trade.

Carson is 4 years younger, will not have to be paid until 2020, and we just spent a huge draft haul getting him not 3 years prior. Conversely, signing Nick long term would essentially mean cutting a few veteran Super Bowl cogs, taking a meaty cap hit on Carson's dead money, and then also potentially looking for a new QB in 4-5 years time, as Nick is not a 'play until he's 40' type guy. He almost retired at 27. Also, in my opinion, there is a higher probability trading Carson bites us in the butt than vice versa. Imagine if Carson goes to the Dolphins and wins a few rings after Brady retires, and then Nick busts. That would be the all-time blunder. You can devalue Carson with certain labels up to this point in his career, but no one is expecting him to outright bust. He'll earn his next contract, and probably the one after that. If he doesnt win here and Nick wins elsewhere.... hey, it happens. The alternative though would be worst case.

The conversation on the Eagles board is about Jacksonville and Oakland being the frontrunners, and how crazy would it be if we ended up with your first rounder. Especially considering we were essentially 2nd place in the Amari sweepstakes.
