So how did the Cowboys go 4-1 with a quarterback that is barely a backup in the NFL?

All on the coaching? Then why did the Cowboys lose to several weaker teams with the same coaching but different QB...
Coaching. They went with a different offensive philosophy to hide Coopers deficiencies and the defense took it upon themselves to step up and win the games.

That is it in a nutshell. Kyler between the ears doesn't have much. He did not seem to put the work in and talent takes you so far. Note his best WR wants out of there.
Yeah I don't think Kingsbury did him any favors nor the receiver who got caught taking performance enhancing drugs.....its a mess out there.

Some on here will still think it's too much......even though it's Jerry's money to pay.
It probably is too much. But the bigger point is it’s business as usual for the NFL when it comes to Franchise QB‘s and Market Price.

Jethro and Son mistake was not signing him sooner . Koodos to Egirls for getting Hurts signed after his 3rd season. Saved them millions if they had waited 2-3 more years .

I would never pay a QB in today's market unless they were a bonafide future hall of fame type talent like Burrow or Herbert.

Pick one in the first round, play 4 years with them, pick up the 5th year option, turn and burn if they are good but not great. Build a contending roster around the player and just slot in the next 1st rounder. After enough tries, you should have gotten lucky and gotten one of those top guys or have won a Superbowl with a good starter on a cheap rookie deal.

Why NFL GMs are too afraid to emulate the SanFran model is very confusing to me.
I guess because they don’t actually win? Rookie qb’s don’t win all that often so yeah, the good ones get paid big bucks after their initial contracts. On top of that, a large percentage of 1st round qb’s bust so it’s a long time to suck before you can’t finally find a good one, even if the rest of your team is competent.

What I don’t understand is why more teams don’t take flyers on later round qb’s and see what sticks. There are numerous successful later round qb’s in the league and all it takes is a mid-round draft pick. It’s so damn hard to evaluate qb’s out of college that I don’t see why more teams do t gamble on the later rounds. The costs are minute and the rewards are basically franchise altering.

Well, at least as I see it right now in the NFC it's Cowboys, Eagles and 49rs (and not even sure about them). Gonna be fun when the season starts. Will add the Lions and Bears may be a threat but time will tell.

No doubt. Then dragging their feet but then. That said, the market will probably continue to grow for quite a while

Also Dak refused to sign a 5 year deal. Hurts getting 5 will help Howie voodoo the payroll more

Which requires good players and a strong overall roster to win 4 games from 5 with a practice squad QB.

That list will be short lived.
Whatever people think of Mahomes, fair play to him for signing such a long contract as he could have dug his heels in and acted like Prescott to earn every single penny as opposed to sign a long term contract to spread the salary and manage the cap efficiently.

I think the Eagles were nuts to overpay, but that's a good thing for their divisional opponents. Good for him but it was a mistake for his team.

It will come back to bite them. Awesome.

I just hope Dak doesn't get a big head about this and want more.

It was reported as team friendly. No need to worry to worry about 2027 and beyond. Frankly, I just care about 2023.
I guess "team friendly" in that he took the "chalk" amount. He didn't try and get 10% more than what he anticipates Burrow or the Chargers QB (blanking on name) will get when they sign. It was just a standard "next highest paid qb in history " deal... but he will quickly get pushed down the line as other QBs sign in next year or 2. Didn't go all Lamar and push for full guarantee. This won't even be top 5 money in a year.

More than TEAM friendly, this was LEAGUE friendly, as every owner in the league wants to quickly put the Watson deal in the rear view window, and never see another fully guaranteed deal happen again.

100 million just to sign his name. They can have MY signature for 3 million. Think of the savings!

Yet the (realistic) haters like you predicted less than 8 wins last year weren’t very realistic while the homers predicted 12-5. Now, who’s the realists?
Not sure what your talkin about Mr. Narrative about me predicting 8 wins? What I can predict is that QB of ours throwin picks and pick sixessss again to lose the important game. Facts.

How is that overpaying? That's just paying. It's basically what everyone expected for a top tier QB...some percentage higher than the last "biggest contract ever". Burrows will be 5% higher than Hurts. The next guy will be 5% higher than Burrow. Etc, etc.

It's not overpaying, it's just the price of QBs on an ever upward sliding scale. Only other option would be to move on from him
