Earl Thomas update

He's due to make $8.5 million and he's sitting out so it's a safe bet he's asking for the moon - this is his last chance for a mega contract. It's also one of the reasons I'm very wary about being the team who gives it to him.

He wouldn't be the first player who hit 30 with a big guaranteed deal who just isn't as motivated to work as he used to be, and suddenly becomes very average.

I'm wary too. I don't want to see the Cowboys going over $10 million per season on any deal, that's more than enough, especially considering you'd also be giving up draft compensation. He's a great player but there are limits.

He was a great player but he's on the wrong side of the NFL age fence and he's had some injuries lately.

According to Mike Fisher the cowboys were granted permission from the seahawks to work on a deal E.Ts reps or at least see what he was wanting. So it was too rich for the cowboys or the seahawks wanted too mich compensation. I think if the price is right he will be in Dallas. Im beyond sick and annoyed with this subject though, i feel like i cant even enjoy the fact that football is back. It almost feels like Adrian Peterson all over again.

If Seattle actually did that, they created this problem themselves by not getting a deal done. If he knows someone else will pay him when Seattle won't, there's no going back.

Whether this deal would be ok for the Cowboys or not depends on the parameters of the deal. A second plus a contract is too high.

What is ET at this stage of his career? I'm not sure. If the Cowboys asked for permission to speak with his agent, then the Cowboys probably believe he has something left in the tank. Otherwise why bother?

Can he play out a 3 year deal at a high level? Maybe but there's no guaranteee. There's risk involved in this.

You can't evaluate this potential deal as to what what ET has done. You have to ask what will he do going forward. His best years are likely behind him.

In terms of pure compensation a 3rd is rich to pay. A 4th is about right. Anything less is probably in the Cowboys favor.

But what about the contract. Does ET want to play for the Cowboys (probably does) and if so will he do it for a reasonable deal?

I wouldn't pay top 5 money for ET because he won't average out as a top 5 safety for the rest of his career. Even top 10 is dicey because he could fall off a cliff and he has been injured of late if I remember correctly.

The draft pick compensation is probably an issue but the elephant in the room is probably the contract numbers.

If ET would play for 3 years at 10 million per year for a 3rd round pick to the Seahawks I think he would be a Cowboy. Anything more than that on any part of the deal will probably kill it. Even that cap number might be a little too rich for the Cowboys. He's not ET in his prime.

I believe he can sit out until the tenth game or something like that without it hurting his FA eligibility. If someone can chime in to verify or correct me.
I think you are correct because that surfaced when Dez was threatening and that caught us by surprise.

Those echo my own exact number limits.

A 3rd round pick tops and $10 million a year is the maximum on any contract extension.

That's it - take it or leave it.

That doesn't help us signing him as FA next year (assuming we don't trade for him this year) because sitting out just extends his rights another year.

When was the last time a player held out long enough for that to happen?

The longest anyone holds out is until mid season (i think it is 6 games l, others say 10) That's the longest they can and still accrue the year.

Players aren't stupid

Is it that many games? Whatever it is he definitely knows it. He's not going to miss out on FA next year. It's just a question of whether the Seahawks want to have that going on this year or just move him now.

And also, are the Cowboys really prepared for life after Jeff Heath?

You have to be kidding, right?
If ET comes he knows it will be as back up to the greatness known as Jeff Heath (#ET2.0)

Yeah if he sits out that long, that is basically the whole season, and they will get nothing for him. Not his playing time or players/ draft picks

Which is why he'd sit out until he has to return to finish the final year of his contact.

I'm not sure but I believe he could sit out about a month of the season first.

In order to accrue a season, a player must be on (or should have been on) full pay status for six or more regular season games.

There is another parameter for gaining an Accrued Season in the new CBA. Any player under contract with a team that fails to report within 30 days prior to the first regular season game will not receive a season towards free agency.

The more ET opens his mouth the less I like him. He’s starting to sound like a whiny, cry baby, entitled diva. He’ll fit in well here, go get him Boys!

I didnt realize the 6 game min applied to the franchise tag and a player can just delay signing it until the Bell negotiations this year.

But like @slick325 pointed out, there are different criteria depending on the contract situation. For example, I know Aaron Donald must report to camp by August 7th (if not the 7th, near that date ) or he will fail to accrue a season - even if he plays all 16 games.

And the Seahawks won't even be honest about that. They won't admit an obvious rebuild for what it is. They want to lie to people and call it "a little reset."

Everything I hear out of that team shows me a dishonest organization.

If the organization throws in the towel in July, how long should they expect the fans to hold out hope.... or more importantly..... buy tickets.

Is it "throwing in the towel" to admit the truth rather than trying to lie to everyone? I find it much more insulting to have someone just out right lie to my face. And that's what the Seahawks front office does, they lie.

Dez part II?
