Ebenezer Ekuban will reportedly be the Broncos' starting weak-side end going into training camp.

John Engelberger, Kenard Lang, and rookie Elvis Dumervil should battle Ekuban, who had four sacks as a reserve in 2005. Jul. 24 - 8:46 pm et

Wasted pick or not, what do you think?

Better for them than for us.

......and yes, big-time wasted pick.

he's a solid DE. few guys stay in this league for 7 years. He's done it. I wanted Kerney.

but if you look historically, Ek has done ok for a mid to late first round pick

Not really for us though.

He did a good job in Cleveland and was alright for Denver last year but the "ghana pirhana" only had a single season with the Cowboys where he had more than 2.5 sacks. I'd expect a lot more from a first round draft pick who was told the day he was drafted that his job was to get sacks.

he was drafted as a guy who we knew would take a while. the kind of guy who can contribute enough to stay in the league while he develops.

that sort of guy is a stupid pick as most players like that are only going to show something after 4-5 years. by that time they'll be FAs

idk, Jerry Jones made the pick, seems to me that Jerry was just blinded by his pass-rush potential

Yeah. But then in 2000, after Ellis had been hurt, Ek had to play on the run side. Great development plan.

For when he was drafted, yes.

20 Ebenezer Ekuban Cowboys DE North Carolina
21 L.J. Shelton Cardinals T Eastern Michigan
22 Lamar King Seahawks DE Saginaw Valley State
23 Antoine Winfield Bills DB Ohio State
24 Reggie McGrew 49ers DT Florida
25 Antwan Edwards Packers DB Clemson
26 Fernando Bryant Jaguars DB Alabama
27 Aaron Gibson Lions T Wisconsin
28 Andy Katzenmoyer Patriots LB Ohio State
29 Dimitrius Underwood Vikings DE Michigan State
30 Patrick Kerney Falcons DE Virginia

Looking at the next 10 picks, you'd have to say that Ek was a good pick.

Shelton is not very good, King hasn't played since 03, Winfield is pretty good, McGrew was a huge bust, Edwards is a journeyman, Bryant is weak, Gibson is 500 lbs, Katzenjammer is a joke, Underwood is mentally ill, and Kerney -- well he's clearly the best among them.

Out of those choices, Ekuban has been pretty good.

Ekuban and Parcells were like water and oil. I always wondered whom Parcells disliked the most "my role Chad" or "treat like a man Ebenezer"

I doubt Bill cared much at all about that comment. He has said over and over that he had no problem with guys who are upset when they aren't getting snaps.

He benched Eb and Eb got pissed. That is pretty much what should happen there.

I'm not sure that you can call Ek a solid player. He does a decent job against the run, but he is horrible at getting sacks. Unfortunately, the RDE's main purpose is to pressure the quarterback. He is a decent backup, but I would consider him a marginal starter. If he starts for the Broncos, I will consider that Denver has a hole at RDE.

Ekuban is going into his 8th year in the league.

A tiny tiny fraction of D-line players stay in the league for that long. He's doing something right.

He sucked at getting to the QB for us. Only 12.5 sacks in 5 years. However since leaving, he has 12 sacked in 2 years. So part of his problem may have been that the rest of our D-line sucked so bad.

6 sacks per season is still not an acceptable number for a weak side DE. He has been in the league for seven years, because he is a decent role player. This fact does not make him a solid player. They guy has averaged 3.5 sacks per season and had four last season. I would bet that Ekubust has no more than six sacks this year.

It seems like the people who judge whether his play is acceptable or not think he's doing well enough. He is still employed. Period.

If his production was unacceptable then he wouldn't have a job now would he?

I would take six sacks opposite Ware this season.

or that it was a horrible 1st round overall

and 8 of those came with Cleveland 2 years ago, I do give Ek props though, that he has managed to endure 6 mediocre, and 1 average year, in the league

forgive me, but isn't Ricky Proehl still employed too? he's a solid role player, but nothing more either, no matter how long Ek has managed to stay employed, 1st round picks aren't supposed to be role players who's ceiling is 8 sacks
