One year one of the best run defenses in the NFL with the Bears. The other two years one of the worst.

I'll believe the improvement when I see it. Not going to buy any hype coming from this team ever again.
It’s show me time for the Joneses. They need to get started with these assistant coach hiring but it seems like more of the same. Friends of the Joneses and being comfortable. I noticed nobody wants to discuss that Eberflus pretty much shut down Washington’s offense the whole game.

It appears we may finally have a D coach who will strongly improve the run defense........IF Jerry gets him the right players.

Deconstructing Matt Eberflus' "HITS" Defense: A Deep Dive into the Chicago Bears' Scheme

Matt Eberflus, the head coach of the Chicago Bears, brought with him a defensive philosophy built on the foundation of the "HITS" principle: Hustle, Intelligence, Toughness, and Speed. This isn't just a catchy acronym; it's a comprehensive approach that permeates every aspect of his defensive scheme. While specific details of play calls remain proprietary, we can analyze observable trends and publicly available information to dissect its core components and understand its effectiveness. This article will explore Eberflus' defensive approach, drawing upon observable game film and analyses to determine its strengths, weaknesses, and future potential.

Building the Matt Eberflus Defense

Looking to the Colts for answers on how the Matt Eberflus defense was built, and how the Bears might look to replicate that success
During Eberflus’ tenure as the Colts defensive coordinator, the team brought in seven interior defensive linemen. One re-signed from the previous regime, one via trade, four from free agency, and one through the draft. All free-agent signings were for low dollar amounts.
Eberflus runs the same scheme as Marinelli. This means quick twitch undersized lineman that struggle stopping the run, something I have been hoping they move away from and add bigger personnel.

You can expect OSA to be resigned and Mazi becoming a terrible fit in his scheme. Zone coverage where we excel in man coverage.

Hate the hire as much as the head coach

Understand but have you seen the success he had as the Colts DC. He did have bigger personnel ( Buckner and Rohand Smith ) and was top 10 3 of 4 seasons. I'm trying not to assume he's the second coming of Marinelli and evaluate him on his own merits as a DC. Something I noticed is he has coached a few LBers who were top 5 in tackcling.

I thought Eberflus who a good coach when he was here, but absolutely hate the scheme. We have been trying to be successful with this scheme for years and have gotten similar results. Change was needed. Now we are going to see Stephen devalue the 1T again and not prioritize stopping the run.

The good news is his interior defenders excel in the broad jump so we’re headed in the right direction as far as that goes.
loooooooooooooooooooooooooooool yet they lead the league in the LEAST pass deflections for all d-lineman since 1984

He can be an end. But it makes no sense to pay him when he will get nicked up or at the very least run out of gas at the end of every year.
This year it wasn't the problem because he was hurt during the earlier parts of the season so he APPEARED to have freshness in him to finish the season, don't be fooled!!

Same here which is why I have tried to learn more about him/his scheme since leaving. So it's basically a Tampa 2....

Matt Eberlus' defensive scheme is based on seven players in coverage, often using a cover-2 zone. This style is sometimes called "vanilla".

How it works
  • Blitzing: Sending the nickel to the passing strength to limit wide-zone runs and attack RPOs

  • Sending the slot/overhang: On early downs, this helps the defense build a wall against the run

  • Mixing up coverages: Eberlus keeps the Bears defense competitive by mixing up coverages and breaking his own tendencie

This scheme is exactly what we had before that was exposed against the better teams.
Eberflus DEF in Chicago was ranked around 25th this season.

Why do the Cowboys continue to look at these schemes with small DT's and the obsession with 3T's.

Rex Ryan should have been the hire

it would be great to have a bigger guy in there to keep your stud player or your LB's from getting dogged around!

Check his defensive rankings as Colts defensive coordinator .........much different from the Bears with him as HC.

Who knows what was said. We were always told Quinn loves big corners and Bland and Diggs were hardly Browner or Sherman. None of these hires will matter if they don’t hire the right personnel.

Poor Mazi is going to have an eating disorder if they make him drop weight again for scheme.
