We do know that Jerry is reluctant to replace guys mid-season. It never would have happened with Wade if his successor wasn't on the staff. I can't see him going with an interim coach and I don't see anyone on the staff that looks like a long term solution at HC. Marinelli a "big name?" He's got a deep hole to dig out of for that - see Lions, Detroit (also listed under worst team ever)

I agree, in the past he has said this. However, in the past he has also replaced Wade with Garrett mid season. I think Jerry is more inconsistent in such matters rather then consistent but that's just my opinion.

I do not agree with you on Marinelli. He is one of, if not, the most respected position coaches in the league. He is also considered one of the top DCs in the NFL. If you are going to throw out the Lions (which I think is at least debatable), you also have to throw the Chicago Bears and the Tampa Bay Bucs out there as well.

For the record, the season prior to 2008 (0-16) they went 7-9, which is not great with Jon Kitna as the starter. In 2008, they had Dan Orlavsky at QB for the most part. Kitna, I believe, was injured early on in 2008. Not an excuse but I do believe that you have to consider factors in those kinds of situations.

How could Marinelli be one of the DCs in the NFL? He's had a total of one DC job and that one only lasting three years. Other coaches who held that position in Chicago, such as Ron Rivera, were not seen as true DCs because Lovie Smith has such a huge role in running the D.

I do agree that Marinelli is one heck of a D-line coach but he's got limited experience as a DC.

And I would still take him over Rob Ryan.

You don't believe that if Marinelli were available right now, he would be one of the top DCs in the NFL for hire?

I mean, it's OK if you don't but I certainly believe he would be.

Yet he took a D-line position.

If you let every D-Coord and position coach in the NFL be free agents, I imagine Marinelli would end up middle of the pack.

You also totally discount how teams around this league seem to feel about Lovie Smith's D-Coordinators. Most view them as position coaches to Lovie's D-Coord/HC role

I don't think that's necessarily true. I think you can say that about some of them but I don't think that's the feeling about Marinelli around the league. Remember, he had success in Tampa way before he ever got to Chicago and developed players such as Rice and Sapp. He was also an Assistant HC there the year they were champs. I understand why you think what you do but I don't agree that the league believes Marinelli is/was the product of Lovie Smith.

Assistant HC is pretty meaningless -- you know that right? You were hoping I didn't know that, huh?

No, I don't agree that AHC is meaningless. I think teams give titles like AHC to coaches they value and want to keep around. No, I don't think it's meaningless at all.

Why on earth would you think I would hope you didn't know something? Why on earth would you even think I would give such a thing a second thought? Seriously, it's a message board.

Yes. Jimmy Robinson has such a very important role here. He was our last assistant head coach. Basically it is a title teams often given to justify paying them more. Even Parcells talked about this saying something like "some guys feel they need the title." Pretty meaningless title.

Perhaps. On the other hand, Jason Garrett was named AHC, here in Dallas in 2008. He held that title until he was made Interim Head Coach in 2010 and then Head Coach. That title was given to him by the person who hired Parcells, Wade and ultimately Garrett. It's all relative IMO.
