You can't write the guy off. He's still a franchise QB until he proves the Giants wrong.

No, he's a first round draft pick.

There is a huge difference.

Well I won't argue because we're talking semantics here. I'd put a franchise label on him because of the expectations, talent, current position, and draft surroundings.

If you argue you must be a great QB before you are labeled a franchise QB then I won't argue with that definition either.

He is the first definition but not the second; at least for now. He's the Giant's QB for now though and will be the entire year unless he melts. A lot of people think he's going to be great. That may not include some of you or even me but he's been given the benefit of the doubt or labeled a wunderkund by many. That's just perception but its out there nontheless.

If Eli's last name wasn't "Manning" and the NFL hype machine wasn't DYING to annoint him as the next "big thing", then we wouldn't be so riled up about him, myself definitely included.
The fact is, he's a decent QB, good but far from great, not horrible but not quite sure if he has the talent to be the "elite" QB that the pundits want him to be. Sometimes he looks good, sometimes he looks bad. Of course, that's like about 12 other QBs in the league right now. Bledsoe included.
What we know is...there is just a handful of "elite" QBs in the league....
Brady, Payton, Palmer....and Eli is not one of them. But he's also far from the bottom like Aaron Brooks, Kerry Collins, Carr, Culpepper.
I don't think he has the talent to be an elite QB but he has the potential to be adequate for NYG to win consistently. And he's not doing that yet either. But they've also played some pretty good teams so far too. Put him against the Texans and maybe he puts up Brunell-like Texans numbers...?
The bottom-line is that the media is what is infuriating us with its insistence upon annointing stars before they've proven it on the field/court. The NBA is really, really bad about it too.

To all those Cowboys complaining last year about why Parcells didn't take the reigns off this offense and let them become a pass-oriented offense.

I'm sorry guys, but the problem Manning (Peyton) and Manning (Eli) will face in becoming champions is their coaches putting everything on their shoulders.

Unless you're a John Elway, you're likely not going to win the big one - with other dominant teams - unless you establish a run-oriented, methodical, mistake-free ball club.
Too much is being placed on Eli's shoulders, and you'll likely get these inconsistent results and blow outs.

even elway batted .000 until he had a terrell davis-fueled running game to take some of the pressure off his shoulders. marino NEVER had that luxury and so nary a ring.

i don't care how good a QB is. no reliable running game - no championship.

i don't feel like Eli can make the excuse he's operating nekkid out there. last i checked... tiki barber is a pretty productive back.

but try to be a little fair. It is just the start of his 3rd year and it is too early to say he is great or a flop. It is however wrong to say he is a bad quarterback or that as some posters state Drew is a much better QB.

Eli - QB rating 7th in NFL, Touchdowns - 1st, Yardage - 3rd, Completion % -66%
Drew - QB rating 27th in NFL, Touchdowns - 14th, Yardage -27rd, Completion % - 49%

It is early in the season and a lot of ball still needs to be played but up to this point Eli isn't doing so bad and is putting up much better numbers to Drew against 3 of the best teams in the league. It is easy to hate the other teams players but there also is nothing wrong to admit an opposing teams player is doing an OK job.
