The also might have known that Murray was pretty much done as an elite RB and instead of saying "we think he will suck now" went with something that would not offend him, giving themselves an out. Done all the time. Teams rarely put down a player when not resigning him. They just come up wi

If we had a better defense in the Green Bay playoff game, we might have won it. If we had a great RB who didn't fumble the ball we might have won as well. That loss was decided by a "marginal" play one way or the other. Either a marginally better D or rushing game would have probably swung that game. So I disagree that one answer is superior.

Same people moaning his loss would have been yelling about another horrible contract paid to an over the hill player who is in obvious decline.

Omg the rueage would be off the charts/Jerrys an idiot/he's too close to his players, blah blah. It was the right call obviously, plus I think folks forget the fumbles that year, not even the Green Bay one. He was putting it on the ground in big situations, not like 3rd and 12 draw plays. And no way he plays with that broke hand after getting paid

I will say for all the whining about signing bad contracts Philly got out of two them very easily this year and even moved up in the draft twice....it was part of how they were able to go get up and get Wentz....almost all contracts are 2-3 years deals anymore, unless the player performs....the last 2 years of Dez' deal are only for 25m.....

CBA makes this mess interesting. Their salaries are slotted.

The CBA actually states that their salaries are NOT slotted. They only seem to be slotted because in 2011, the NFLPA accidentally sent the rookie pool allotments for every draft pick to all of the agents, so the NFL sent them to the teams. The CBA says those allotments are supposed to be kept confidential. Since then, almost all rookie contracts have been done using those allotments to determine the dollar figures, but they don't HAVE to be done that way, and some contracts aren't. Teams can still sign players for more or less than their allotment, if they want (and if the players agree to them), as long as the team has room under its total rookie pool and its total limit for rookie contract values.

Point is...its too much to pay either player they would have taken...for a player who had t played an NFL down yet. Ramsey didn't scream elite in college and may not live up to that contract either. Just cause he plays defense doesn't mean he would have automatically improved it.
Look. People who spent a lot more time looking at prospects than you or I have said he was an elite talent that would have been worth a top 5 selection in most any draft. He plays a position of need that commands massive amount of dollars in free agency.

It was a no brainer. And proved our brain trust has no brain.

Doesn't matter if other teams can get out of bad contracts - the Cowboys can't ever seem to. That's all that is relevant to us.

Except this is being paid to a far better prospet who has been nothing but healthy... Oh and he is 21 not on the wrong side of his 20's...

Elliott hasnt proven anything yet.... Murray set the franchise record for most rushing yards in a season. I expect Elliott to be an excellent back, but in hindsight I wonder if the Cowboys would have resigned Murray knowing what they know now. Murray was a pretty good 3 down back.

Philly is paying for their contract mistakes as they are on the hook for 15M dead money this year. (Dallas has under 1M).

But the Cowboys top 5 cap hits this year are 58M, and 78M in 2017. Philly's top 5 are counting 46M in 2016 and 61M in 2017. That's how you leave your team open to getting out of bad contracts.

I'll bet Elliot never gets 1800+ yards rushing like Murray did.

You really want to make that bet? Ill one up that. Ill bet you that Elliott doesnt get chased down by defensive lineman in the open field. Ill also bet you Elliott holds a football and doesnt look for contact.

I don't remember Murray getting chased down from behind by lineman, but Elliott certainly got caught from behind in college. He's not a super fast RB, pretty average. He has a good stop and start burst and beautiful cut to him.

So, I wouldn't make that bet.

Your right, i just get very mad when people compare Murray to Elliott. Elliott hasnt played a down in the NFL. Ive been guilty of it, but i have pumped the brakes and am waiting to see what he does on the field. Comparing the 2 doesnt make sense. They are completely different runners.

And they ate a ton of dead money in the process.

Money that could be used now or in the future to sign cornerstone players.
