Honestly, I thought he simply get's to talking too fast and forgets what he is even trying to say. He just didn't seem very comfortable. It isn't really a slam. Everyone isn't cut out to be on TV.

Wade Phillips is a kind of coach who have to change how he do things if Cowboys are going to be success.

Am I the lone Cowboy fan who doesn't like what I see of Emmitt Smith as a person? If anything, the guy's somehow underrated as a player, but every time I hear him talk he comes off sounding petty and opinionated. Not a good combination. I never liked the stories about how he handled autographs. I also have a hard time forgiving him for Dancing with the Stars.

It's got nothing to do with his opinions on this particular team, because I'm not aware of him being particularly critical. He just comes off as one of the guys from the 90s teams I'd least like to have a beer with.
After reading Boys will be Boys FWIW, I came out with a pretty poor impression of Emmitt overall. Loved the player. The person? Not as much.

Same goes for guys like James Washington and Alvin Harper/

Not at all. His "diamond" comment was telling and should have turned a few heads but it really didn't because he was still revered.

The post above pointed out some things from "Boys Will Be Boys" that basically color my opinion on him now, from a personal perspective. I don't hold him in high regard "personally", but I guess I can segregate the two. Loved what he did as a player in terms of accomplishments, but I am skeptical when I still hear people claiming he was a selfless saint. There are rumblings that he even played through the shoulder injury against the Giants as much for personal pride (the rushing title) as he did for team pride (winning the division). He was fortunate that those teams had "enforcers" so to speak because he did have big diva potential and it showed when they all left. It doesn't have any relationship to my respect level for what he accomplished any more than his grammatical fumbles do these days.

But again, I don't expect football people to be "heroes" and "Cowboys" both on and off the field. I don't care about that type of romantic nonsense anymore. I gave that up after puberty.

I'd hate to try to talk to him if he was drunk. Slurring and crude grammar? No thanks.

I think he also said it's a "Tragedy" what happen to Richard Seymor. Going from the Pats to Oakland.

I don't find making millions to move to another city a "TRAGEDY".

Ebonics has been frankly discredited by reputable acamedicians. It is a short cut that teaches BAD habits.

Is it as ugly as his inability to express himself properly? I love emmitt for obvious reasons, but he has easily become one of my least favorite 90s cowboys. I think it all started with the "diamonds among trash" comment.

pretty sure he meant the team and his play was trash and the diamond was the dallas cowboys.

Emmitt is on Cowherd and hammering the 'Boys!

-Will win seven games....maybe
-Roy W is good but lazy
-Coach/team have not changed
-No ability to stretch the defense
-Will have to play ball control

Short conversation, but he didn't paint a pretty picture, for what ever that's worth.

I'm trying to figure out how that is slammin' the Cowboys...Sounds like he hit it on the head

He won the rushing title that year on the very run he injured his shoulder. He didn't have to take another step. He had already claimed the title. Next...

I'm reading the book, "Boys will be Boys," by Jeff Pearlman and Emmitt apparently wasn't all that well liked by a lot of his teammates. Extremely self-centered. I mean, extreme.

We have to take into account Pearlman's apparent dislike of Emmitt, but there are a lot of direct quotes from former teammates.

Off the thread topic a bit but I started reading the book late last night and just couldn't put it down. The chapter about how Jones bought the team, fired Landry and other Cowboys employees (some with 20 years of service) is just an incredible read. Great book so far.

"stretch the field" is one of those key commentator talking points that's easy to use to pigeonhole a team and make for easy criticisms.

Very true. It is in the same set of nebulous vernacular as when mediots discuss a player "with a lot of upside", he has "a high motor", and "he brings a lot to the field". They are simple sound bites that the lowest common denominator can wrap their wittle itty bitty intellects around and quote to their equally inefficient neural friends to sound all smart like.
