SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Emmitt Smith thinks federal investigators targeted Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick to get to others involved in an alleged dogfighting operation.

"He's the biggest fish in the whole doggone pond right now so they're putting the squeeze on him to get to everyone else," Smith said Saturday.

Vick and three associates are accused of competitive dogfighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting, and conducting the enterprise across state lines. Vick is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday in federal court in Richmond, Va.

Smith, who was enshrined in the College Football Hall of Fame on Saturday along with 19 others, was asked what he thought about the Vick situation. He said he believes federal investigators are trying to pressure Vick to turn on the others.

"Now, granted he might have been to a dogfight a time or two, maybe five times, maybe 20 times, may have bet some money, but he's not the one you're after. He's not the one you're after, he's just the one whose going to take the fall -- publicly."

But Smith also placed some blame on Vick, saying athletes need to realize they have to break ties with some people from their past "because where we're going, it's not for everybody to come with us. You have to learn to cut some of those guys loose. Because the things that they do, we cannot do no more."

Smith, the NFL's career leading rusher, said young athletes have to make decisions about who they associate with because it could harm their careers.

"From an athletic standpoint, from an endorsement standpoint, from an investment standpoint, from a business standpoint, those doors are opening. The question is now, do you want to do the same old junk you've been doing for 18 or 20-something years, or do you want to step into the real world of business and handle your business like you're supposed to handle it?"

I got to disagree w/ Emmitt on this one

how can the biggest fish be the smallest player?

even if VIck wasn't the biggest player, he still broke the law

Interesting...because the Feds might pressure Vick into ratting out more members of this dog fighting club all around the country, just to try and save his own butt?

Can you imagine what would happen if that happened? Vick would be labled a "rat"...and that don't fly in the gansta population. Either way, Vick is in some hot water!

If Vick was the money guy financing that whole operation, he IS a big fish. No intimate knowledge of the dog fighting scene here (thankfully), but I don't think there is a big cabal running everything. A guy bankrolling a 100 dogs is pretty high up in the field, imo. Him being a celebrity adds icing to the cake for the prosecutors.

Thank you Nancy Grace.

No need for a trial now, he was indicted, ergo he broke the law.

It's amazing how athletes will stick together when things get tough. Maybe they remember some of the things they might have done when they are young and certainly wouldn't want the spotlight to shine on them. Anyway, totally disagree with Emmitt that Vick being pressured on turn on other 3 and or even the possibility he can identify others. I think Vick is the big fish and I think the Feds have a real good case against him. Even if for some reason somebody on the jury is so enthralled with Vick's celebrity that they fall to convice (like OJ case), the fans throwough the country will turn and Vick will be as welcome as OJ.

I really think one of the others indicted knows just as much about Vicks operation and his contacts as Vick and also think (although there already 2 witnesses who will testify against Vick) 1 or 2 of the other people indicted might also turn on him. Vick is the big fish. Feds making a point to any other participants of dogfighting -- we can take Vick down and we can take you down and we are coming after you. I also don't think it is just the dogfighting and cruelty to the dogs (although that's more then enough), it's also about the drug use at these events, the gambling & people bringing young children to these events as well.

Idiot. So big fish are immune from prosecution? You want to give Michael a pass on this alleged crime (heinous) because he is a big fish?"

"Now, granted he might have been to a dogfight a time or two, maybe five times, maybe 20 times, may have bet some money, but he's not the one you're after. He's not the one you're after, he's just the one whose going to take the fall -- publicly."

A dog fight or two? Maybe five times, maybe 20????
He's not the one we're after? I thought we were after the perps conducting and participating in illegal dog mayhem

And your backtracking with taking responsibility and dealing with your career and bidness and all, those were just empty words, Emmitt, you simpleton.
Go back to your tango lessons.:p:

Scroll to NFL Vet Emmitt has advice for Vick

Basically what he said was that he thinks that Govt wants to use Vick to go after others. And that Vick may not be the primary target.

Emmitt's wrong. Vick is the target. This case will set an example for all the no-names out there, the wannabe dog fighters and ring leaders. The publicity generated will do wonders for combating this activity. Many have suggested that Vick is being singled out, and this is true. He is being pursued because he is so prominent, and people who otherwise wouldn't pay attn will indeed take notice. it won't stop it, but it will reduce it measurably when they realize the consequences.

I heard the audio quote on ESPN radio. Emmitt's statement was confusing to me. At one point it sounded like Emmitt was saying that Vick was being used to catch the kingpins of the dog fighting world. At another point, it sounded like Emmitt was saying that Vick was, well, "the biggest fish in the whole doggone pond."

In any event, Emmitt observation makes sense - prosecutors certainly could be pressuring Vick to reveal the identities of (and perhaps testify against) the major dogfighting figures (while at the same time making an example out of Vick).

I don't care what Emmit said on the situation. You were the one who basically said it is clear he is guilty so my comment is directed at you.

You get upset when some one assumes that Vick is guilty but you don't care if Emmit stated that Vick might have attended several dogfights, which is illegal, why is that?

I'd be interested if Emmit has additional info to make those statement, if not, then he is just speculating, just like rest of us.
