While I don't love people evaluating female sideline reporters purely on the basis of their looks, I have to say that I was never particularly impressed with either Pam Oliver's or Erin Andrews' football acumen. I suspect sideline reporters are basically a contrivance to try to get more interest in the game from American women and the networks prefer to have nice-looking women so the men are ok with it (or happy about it).

When we get females in the actual booths I'll be inclined to believe the league (or the networks) are doing it because they appreciate what these women have to say relative to the game. It's hard to be taken seriously in the 30-second cut-aways sideline reporters get aired.

It's kind of surprising, actually, that we don't have any women in the booths yet, come to think of it.

They surely couldn't be worse than Billick:D Agree in general though, it would take a knowledgeable female in the booth to sway men.

this.. oliver has never impressed me with her football knowledge and i suspect andrews isn't in danger of doing that either. just give me the injury update and get on with the game.

Pam has and continues to be viewed by myself, as a striking woman. And she has

They do keep a fan updated on what is transpiring on an injury or other developments about to go into effect on the field...they do have a function and are useful as such.

Actual Ducks don't look nearly as stupid.

That's because ducks are meant to look like that. This could explain why women who like making their lips like that have a tendency to quack a lot.

No female in the booth is going to sway men especially those who played and coached the game. There's only one way a female can sway a man and it won't be because of their football knowledge. :)

Come on. That's not true. There are mail commentators in every sport who never played the game and yet still know enough to carry on an interesting conversation during a telecast. I challenge any female broadcaster to be less interesting than Joe Namath or Dennis Miller, for example.

You could just as easily have a journalism intern on the sidelines collecting the information and relaying it to Joe Buck in the booth. It'd cost less and provide the same content.

They like to go to the sidelines to give the impression fans are getting closer to the action, which I get, but it's not exactly anything that requires a high degree of skill.

Agreed, but you already get a small enough cross section of media talents...which are grossly exaggerated for the benefit of males in the industry.

Where were all of you guys complaining that Joe Buck was too short when he was first tabbed to do color commentary for Aikman?

I will speak only for me, but the fact that he was a dude lost sex appeal. The height assessment domino never was in danger of getting knocked over

It just seems we spend more time criticizing the physical appearance of female reporters than we do the men. Goose, for example, has been darkening sidelines for years, and nobody seems to take issue with that particular unfortunate aesthetic.
Probably because 80% of the posters here are in worse shape. Sorry precisely 87.432%

okay, so upper left looks really stupid, and upper right looks even dumber. Lower left looks kind of crazy and a little intimidating, but lower right looks like the devil incarnate.

They all scare me... but I'd literally run from lower right. She looks like she has a few body parts in her basement, for sure.

Well, regardless of how beautiful Erin Andrews is, I think the important thing is can she deliver on the job she was given. She's got big shoes to fill, because I think Pam still has the goods. But you can't fight age in the media, although she looks nowhere near her age. Lady got some good genes.

I'll regret this.

But I think Asian and African-american women,as long as they keep themselves in shape, tend to age much slower on average. Pam is hot - never would pegged her +50

Also, is it just me or do women tend to more exponentially complement other attractive women the further they are older than themselves?

My wife, her sisters and many of her friends seem to throw compliments around to younger and pretty women like there are only 3 compliments left in the world.

Been nice knowing you all

As a woman I admire any woman that looks nice & takes care of herself. Age doesn't matter.

I think both the ladies in question are very attractive.

It's true because women don't play football at least it's not a sport typically associated with women so they're not going to be taken as seriously talking about the game as a male reporter regardless if they never played. This is one big reason they hire these beautiful women to report and cover the game. Their looks attract attention which gets viewers to pay more attention. There's a gal who does the local weather here in LA she's so hot (hotter than the weather lately) she's more popular than anyone who's doing the local news in the area due primarily to her looks. The male commentators who never played the game can carry on an interesting conversation during the game because they're trained at commentating and most grew up following the game.

It's easy to talk about a sport you've been following for decades. Joe Namath is going to be a lot more interesting to "listen" to about football than a hot chick whose gig as a bikini model/Hooters girl/cheerleader helped get their foot in the door to eventually covering the NFL. As for Dennis Miller that debacle was a result of trying to add someone with a sense of humor to the Monday Night booth ala Don Meredith. That was a ridiculous experiment that backfired. All Michaels had to put his hand over Millers mouth a few times during telecasts. The NFL wants women to be involved in the game but most of the women we see reporting on the game do just that they "report", conduct interviews and ask questions to those who play and coach the game.

Someone like the NFL AM host--forgetting her name--could handle it. I actually think she's great. Though morning show hostess isn't exactly a high bar to clear.

EDIT: this is the woman I was referring to:

Michelle Beadle is probably my favorite when it comes to women involved in sports, I may not agree with her but she does seem rather knowledgable. I believe she's still co-host of sports nation, which I watch time from time.
