The plan was to use Escobar in the slot a couple of years ago but he lost out to Beasley who's developed into an excellent slot receiver. Escobar has been stuck in a log jam of receivers. He's made a few athletic catches but just hasn't panned out. A lot of us knew the day we drafted him he wouldn't pan out with Witten here. We've wasted a number of second round picks on TEs and high risk players.

Section from Rico Gathers article including working at OT on the scout team:
http://www.star-telegram.com/sports/nfl/dallas-cowboys/cowboys-corner-blog/article111318157.html

“That’s literally the drastic change. I remember coming in and not really fully understanding anything. It’s just like, ‘OK, I’m here about to run these routes. When it came to blocking, it was a blur to me.’ Now I know the concepts.”

Gathers has garnered praise from teammates and the coaching staff.

Gathers has particularly improved his blocking ability by working at offensive tackle on the scout team, and continues to refine his route-running abilities.

“He’s getting better every day. He really is,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We felt like he had a lot of physical ability, which he clearly does. And we felt like he had the right mindset and mentality to do this. I think that combination has really helped him improve.

“He’s got his eyes open, he’s got his ears open and he’s learning every day and he approaches it the right way. He’s got great intensity in practice. Technically he has so far to go but he’s come so far in a short period of time, so it’s been a good project for us and he’s really taken advantage of the opportunity.”

escobar is back from a injury, and that play was designed to go to him and worked perfectly.
They may start to use him more now.

Dallas' front office definitely knows how to scout TEs. I believe that Pablo will be a starter in the League for years to come. He just didn't get used in Dallas. He will be like Fasano and Bennett before him.

I really hate the fact that M. Bennett went to other teams and is a beast. What happened to him here?

beast? so a 940 yard 6 TD year is beast? if he is such a beast why did Chicago let him go? other than that one year hes had 759 yard and 626 yard years. i think the whole Bennett is a "beast" is a highly exaggerated.

I always wondered how good a receiver Escobar really is.
It does not seem that he has received any consistent playing time.

May be he is not a great blocker, but is he a better receiver than Swaim and Hanna?
Though I dont understand why he never seems to get a chance in the red zone.
Would have been nice if we could have used the 4th quarter in the Browns game to evaluate players like Escobar and Whitehead as receivers (yes, I remember the TD).

It seems TEs drafted in the 2nd round by the Cowboys leave after their rookie contracts and become starters else where.
In the case of Bennett, he became pretty good.

It would be nice if we get a chance to evaluate him, if nothing else but for a 3 year deal as Witten insurance?
That would beat using yet another 2nd round pick on a TE in 2017...
Swaim has out played Escobar. He won't see a second contract in Dallas. Marty B always had the talent, but lacked commitment and focus. We traded Fasano to Miami so it's not like he walked. Both him and Marty B are twice the TE Escobar is

Why hate that? The guy wouldn't be that here. There's no way he plays over Witten

He's a good te who is a good blocker
His problem has been more between the ears than between the lines but he does have too many drops for a te

Escobar is basically Martellus Bennett without the drama.

I've said it a bunch of times that the guy has never been used right. 82 is not coming off the field and I get that. But when he retires I would love to see he and Swaim paired together. That would be a good combo to me. Escobar is a playmaker in the passing game but he's just on the wrong team right now

I'm just talking about what I seen from him this year. Seems like everyone is just ready to jump on everyone for every word. Excuse me for using the word beast.

When you say Swaim is better blocking on the move, you are saying Swaim can play the H position?
Does Swaim play the Y much?
What does Hanna play?

Swaim does play the H.

I don't know how they intend to use Hanna this year. I've seen him do both in the past. Witten hardly ever leaves the Y this season except to line up as a WR. He used to move around more.

Escobar is just too tall and high cut to get under people when he is on the move. Inline he has excellent technique and functional strength.
