ESPN 980: Commanders GM Vinny Cerrato resigns... Skins hire Bruce Allen

Per PFT:
Mike Holmgren's dalliance with the Browns might not be prompting the Seahawks to crap or get off the crapper.

But it's apparently forcing another team to move quickly.

ESPN 980 in Washington is reporting that Commanders executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato has resigned.

Adding credibility to the report is the fact that Commanders owner Daniel Snyder owns the station.

The move, which apparently would have happened at the end of the season, likely means that owner Daniel Snyder wants to make a run at Holmgren.

We say this with full realization of the fact that Holmgren called out the Commanders in early November for stripping coach Jim Zorn -- a former Big Show assistant -- of play-calling duties.

"That bothered me a lot," Holmgren told ESPN Radio in Chicago at the time. "Jim Zorn is one of the nice people. I'm a nice guy, but I'm not that nice. Jim Zorn is really a nice man. What they did, I did not like it at all."

But if Snyder can pin the decision on Cerrato, and if Snyder is willing to allow Zorn to continue as coach under Holmgren's supervision, maybe this arrangement can work.

Another potential attraction for Holmgren could be the presence of Sherm Lewis, his long-time offensive coordinator in Green Bay.

With two prime-time games only six days apart, it makes no sense for the Commanders to make such a dramatic change only three games before the end of the season, unless it was done specifically to give the 'Skins a seat at the Big Show's table.

Cerrato departure fuels Shanahan speculation, too
Posted by Mike Florio on December 17, 2009 9:06 AM ET
Though the timing of the resignation of Commanders executive V.P. of football operations Vinny Cerrato has prompted speculation that owner Daniel Snyder wants a ticket to the Big Show, other league insiders believe that Snyder has a different target.

"Holmgren's not going there," one league source opined to us this morning. "It's [Mike] Shanahan. The timing is just coincidental. Vinny was told that Shanny didn't want him, so he resigned."

Whether it's Mike Holmgren, Mike Shanahan, or someone else remains to be seen.

In that regard, stay tuned. Our pal Jay Glazer of FOX might have something interesting soon.

cool. Glad to hear it. the best part of the skins is the defense, no doubt shannahan will screw that up as soon as he gets there by hiring jim bates or something.

That is for another time. For now, I am elated it is not Cerrato!

I am not convinced it might not be Holmgren, despite what Florio says.

It is a natural fit. Zorn could continue and he is familiar with Sherman Lewis as well.

Could be. The Commanders are playing well since the joe bugel tirade against atlanta.

I have a hard time believing zorn would stay as the guy though.

Being reported now ---

Skins will sign Bruce Allen as GM (former Oak and TB orgs). That means that there very well might be a play for Gruden here.

Zorn is gone.

Hmmm.

Gruden makes sense. He knows the WCO and they would not have to scrap everything.

But Bruce Allen? Not so sure about that one. Isn't he related to George Allen?

Don't know about the relation, but it is being reported in the Wash Press that Bruce Allen is the guy they are gunning for; so it isnt that far of a stretch from Allen to Gruden.

Oh no, if Bruce Allen comes on, it is pretty strong that Gruden goes with him. They were like a package deal in Tampa.
