ESPN 980: Commanders GM Vinny Cerrato resigns... Skins hire Bruce Allen

Commanders hire Bruce Allen
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 17, 2009 10:07 AM ET
The Washington Commanders have moved very fast in filling the void left by today's resignation of Vinny Cerrato.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Commanders have hired Bruce Allen as their executive vice president and general manager.

A press conference is expected this afternoon to make the hiring official.

It is not clear how the Commanders could hire Allen so quickly without running afoul of the league's Rooney Rule. The Commanders may have quietly interviewed a minority candidate, or they may have given Allen a title that doesn't require Rooney Rule compliance.

This is the talk of the town in DC and Casserly was on 106.7. He pretty much stated that there is no way they could hire anybody this fast because of the first year of the Rooney Rule as regards to Senior Executives. Dan Snyder has to interview a minority candidate, so the idea that they signed anybody already is pretty much wishful thinking. Also, Gruden re-signed with ESPN committing to more broadcasting, but he supposedly, per Casserly, can walk away.

All they have to do is call someone and say, hey we are going to hire so and so but we need to say we called or interviewed you for the job. I believe that is basically what Jerry did with Dennis Green before he hired Bill or Wade (can't remember which one it was but he did call Dennis to appease the Rooney Rule).

And pure speculation on my part but I would imagine the person they hired were ok with it and maybe got a little gift for it but who knows.

Don't laugh, that is just the kind of guy I could see Jerry loving because he would do whatever Jerry said and agree with everything Jerry said. Vinny has a great deal of success playing the role of Smithers.

:laugh2:

Actually, Cerrato would be a heck of a Scouting Dept Head to report to a real GM for the draft.

He has proven that.

So now they have Bruce Allen? Wasn't he the guy that Tampa just fired, with Gruden, because he and Gruden had turned the Bucs into garbage after they took over the team?

I am not sure how long Allen was there is why I'm asking.

He is the guy Tampa fired. He was with the Raiders before that.

Yeah I knew he was fired there this offseason but I wasnt sure how long he'd been there. I know now that he got there in 2004. Yeah this isn't exactly something for the Skins to be all that thrilled about. This guy is terrible at his job.

Not much shocking here outside of people actually liking Gruden in the booth... Really?

Ughhh are the Skins going to finally become good again? Come on Jerry make some moves next year! You have to respond to this!

Really? When? When he was the recruiting coordinator for Holtz at ND? He has a poor track record in the NFL.

Not the case...I still don't believe it was Gruden/Allen that was behind this product playing in Raymond James Stadium.

Bruce came in the year after the Super Bowl.

I have a guy in my office who was so sick of the Redsk*ns that he gave me his tickets to the Cowboys/Redsk*ns game.

Now that Vinny has been fired, he's already guaranteeing that they will make the playoffs next year. :laugh2:

He said, with a straight face, that this is the greatest day for Redsk*n fans since their last Super Bowl.

Except that Tweedle Dum (Snyder) still remains. I wouldn't make playoff predictions until I knew who was replacing Cerrato and Zorn.
