Everything you posted is true but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing that a whiney, complaining, negative attitude player who really only wanted one more big payday is gone from the team. I feel its a good thing that he's gone and I'm happy about it. Let him go to that debacle in Oakland and make a few more million. You know what, I bet if he would have never become the whiney, complaining Greg Ellis and just played out his career in Dallas, he could have made far more money off of being Greg Ellis in Dallas after he retired. He would have been loved by everyone as a lifetime Cowboy who was a good player and loyal to the team. He could have opened a restaraunt and any number of businesses and Cowboys fans would flock to them. He would have autograph signings to make money until the day he died. I wouldn't pay more than 50 cents and wait more than 10 seconds for a Greg Ellis autograph now, not to mention I wouldn't waste the gas to drive anywhere for his autograph. He was one of my favorite players until a few years ago, but when you turn your back on the team, or quit like Roy Williams did, then you're dead to me!

He was the only Cowboy player to participate in the closing ceremonies at Texas Stadium.

I just wish Al Davis had the common sense to trade down in a situation like that.

I did not agree with how the raiders conducted their draft as you I think they could have traded down and still had the oppertunity to get Bey. Now that the draft is over and the dust settles you still have a very good WR and the Raiders have a pretty good running game right now ranking in the top 10 and while I don't think the Raiders passing game will come around right away I still think given the talent they are starting to bring in that they could be a pretty good team in the next 2 to 3 years.

Was it really worth it?

All the paranoia, all the pissing and moaning. Sent to football purgatory.

Don't worry Greg. I'm sure you'll get a hell of a welcome when you show up on Thanksgiving with your 2 to 3-win team and have the doors blown off you.

Actually, the Raiders could probably win a few games this year without that tub of lard playing QB.

What's it going to be then, eh?

Ellis to Oakland is a surprise

June 15, 2009 2:45 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Bill Williamson

I'm a little surprised former Dallas sack star Greg Ellis plans to sign with the Raiders.

I've been following Ellis since Dallas cut him a couple of weeks ago when the team couldn't find a trade partner. I was mostly keeping tabs on whether Ellis might end up in Denver or Kansas City. Both of those teams are transitioning to a 3-4 defense and are in dire need of a legitimate pass-rusher. Ellis played in a 3-4 scheme with the Cowboys.

Yet, he decided to sign with Oakland for three years. The Raiders are the only team in the AFC West to use a 4-3 defense. Ellis will move back to defensive end from outside linebacker. He has 77 career sacks in 11 seasons. Ellis, who turns 34 in August, had eight sacks for Dallas last season.

In addition to schematic reasons, the move is a surprise because Oakland already has many pass-rushers, including promising second-year player Trevor Scott, and the Raiders drafted three defensive ends in April. The signing of Ellis is another sign that Derrick Burgess could be traded.

Ellis' signing is not a bad move by Oakland. Sacks are precious and if Ellis can provide another six to eight sacks this season, Oakland's defense will be better for it. He may be nearing the end of his career, but his eight sacks in 2008 show he is not done yet. This isn't a defense-changing move by Oakland, but it won't hurt the team.

Ellis is the second aging former Pro Bowl player Oakland has signed in a month. It added fullback Lorenzo Neal in May. Thus, Al Davis' love affair with veterans continues.

Oakland could easily intermix 3-4 looks in as they have for years. They did it under Ryan and could do so again with Marshall, who is comfortable with the 3-4. If that's the case, Ellis isn't a "surprise".

Research. It isn't that hard.

But coming from the same ESPN imbeciles who believe that CB is our greatest weakness, it is not that shocking.

I swear sometimes ESPN's take on things is about as dense as the uninformed audience they appeal to.

Don't blame him taking the money, but at the same time it's hilarious that he would go to Oakland of all places. I can't see him getting even 8 sacks again with the Raiders getting run on all game.

Yeah, because he didn't care and wasn't embarrassed about how they lost that game!

Ellis needed to be gone because his whining had taken a toll but that statement is ridiculous.

Ellis cared wayyyy toooo much about every little thing. He was the FIRST person to talk about the team having poor chemistry and not playing well or together last season. He just whines so much no one paid it much mind.

Ellis was definitely a proud Cowboy and he isn't some hired mercenary. Yes, he left and quite willingly but a lot of guys spend 1 or 2 years elsewhere.. see Emmitt Smith. Ellis needed to move on and his best play was behind him but he was a good Cowboy for a lot of years.
