ESPN: Cowboys could have decision to make with Rolando McClain

Quote from article;

"Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said McClain is at a point in his rehab where he could be ready to go Week 1 against the New York Giants if he were eligible."

So if he would be ready in week 1, why would you PUP him until week 6? It is 6-weeks he would have to be out on PUP correct? I guess to carry an extra spot until week 5.

They could carry another player regardless. If a player is on suspension, he doesn't count against the 53. As for why they would put him on PUP, I think it's speculation by the media at this point.

Keep him, put him on PUP. The suspension probably goes for team activities and pay, so regardless of whether he's on PUP he wouldn't get paid.

I believe that if you're otherwise eligible, if you're on PUP, you still get paid.

he'd still be barred from the facility

My guess is the fact that he is going to be basically cut-off from the team and the facility worry the front-office greatly. Ro strikes me as a guy who needs constant attention.

Suspended players are not always banned.

That backup DB that was suspended last year was allowed to come to the facility but Scandrick was not. I don't know how they make those determinations. Josh Brent was allowed to return several weeks before his suspension was over, IIRC.

Best case scenario is that one of the other LBs step up and fill the role and do a good job at it, even if it is a young guy that is still learning the ropes. So when he comes back we can say...later gator.

There is always going to be something with this guy. We are better off trying to replace him when we can...the sooner the better. He has all the talent in the world but his head and heart is just not into football IMO.

Call me crazy but I want Ro on this team. We have Super Bowl aspirations and we can't replace his talent with anyone else on our squad. It'll suck not to have him, whether it be for 4, 6 or 8 games, but he's a difference maker when he's in there.

Talent-wise, of course. But will he be fully committed when you really need him? Or does it depend on his mood that day?

I'll have to review the rules re PUP and concurrent suspension. I doubt he can serve his suspension on PUP. That circumvents the purpose of the suspension.

I'll be back.

Not really since he normally would still be paid while being on PUP but because of the suspension he will lose those checks

Not calling you crazy, calling all the posters who think we should cut bait with him crazy! Anybody catch Brinkleys play in the scrimmage or PS game the other night??

I will call them crazy we need RO is a force in the middle and if he only plays the last half of the season and the playoffs that is fine with me. Another thing is he is not just a tackling machine he also can defend the pass, last year in the playoffs he made some big plays intercepting passes !!!

Best case scenario is: The Cowboys keep him around on their terms.

Best thing anyone can do for themselves or Ro is just stop talking about him til he plays again.

The team has no reason to do anything with him right now. He's ineligible for at least a month into the regular season.

All that said, Dallas is trying to win a SB and if you can coax 6-7 plus games out of Ro and that happens the final month and in the playoffs you'd be absurd to panic now.

When healthy Ro is arguably the most physical and dominating MLB in football. He is bigger, stronger and faster than everyone else.

It amazes me that the same people who love guys like Charles Haley want to cut Ro McClain.

Charles Haley always loved the game and always had heart.

Charles might have been crazier than a three tailed squirrel but he was without question full of heart and love of the game.

Problem with Ro is his love for the game and it HAS to be questioned because he has quit the game before and does not seem to be around it when he absolutely does not have to be.

The best-case scenario is that other LBs step up because it helps our team. However, for what Dallas is paying McClain, I don't really care that it is always going to be something with him. If we can get half a season out of him where he helps this team succeed, I'm OK with that. The key isn't getting rid of him, but just not paying him much because of the issues that seem to surround him; issues that I don't think are cut-worthy, but worthy of caution.

Haley had serious health (back)limitations here as a Cowboy. He couldn't play heavy snaps or practice much during the week or off-season.
The team had to manage his snaps and try to save him for when it really mattered. But when nursed along he gave you elite reps in bursts.
That's what Ro does.

"Love of the game" is fan talk and it is pretty meaningless really because it is all hear say and opinion. Does Ro dislike the game? Or perhaps he just dislikes how it effects his body and even mind? For all we know Ro will retire to coach HS football in Alabama.

I can tell you this much. The guys on the team respect the crap out of Ro McClain. When he was playing well and healthy last year the entire defense played with a swagger we hadn't seen since perhaps Haley.

It's not "fan talk" when the player himself has quit. You can spin it all you want but when a player quits that is not "fan Speak"

Plus he has failed drug tests.

Plus he could have did rehab around here but instead stayed around Alabama.

Again...this guy is not Haley.
Haley loved the game, sure he had a bum back but you did not question his love for the game...you do so with McClain because he has done so himself.

We were discussing serving the suspension concurrently while on PUP. And it appears he can do that. Yes, he will lose 4 weeks of checks but not the other two. They gain a roster spot and lose him for 6 weeks with him on PUP. They lose a roster spot but gain 2 games if not.
