ESPN: Cowboys could have decision to make with Rolando McClain

Keep him, put him on PUP. The suspension probably goes for team activities and pay, so regardless of whether he's on PUP he wouldn't get paid.

I believe that if you're otherwise eligible, if you're on PUP, you still get paid.

Right, he will be of value, and when playoff time comes you want him ready and healthy.

We were discussing serving the suspension concurrently while on PUP. And it appears he can do that. Yes, he will lose 4 weeks of checks but not the other two. They gain a roster spot and lose him for 6 weeks with him on PUP. They lose a roster spot but gain 2 games if not.

Dallas saves a little money, kind of like Hardy.

I would think they would want him back in the lineup as soon as he has served suspension.

If you plan to keep the player I don't see much advantage of putting him on PUP. You gain a roster spot for 4 weeks but you lose him for two more weeks.
He is suspended 4 games and will likely miss the 5th getting back in game shape
But if he is on PUP he misses 6 games and would likely need another week to get in any kind of game shape
To me the question is can you get him motivated to play. If so the talent is worth the headache
To me it's all about his head, does he really have the will and desire to play

That'd be my guess. Depends on how others are doing, injuries, his rehab, etc.

Sure if they take an injury and need the spot that is one thing but outside of that Ro in the middle give Dallas the strength at the MLB to control the middle of the line

I would much rather have Ro back right after Game 4.

He can start practicing, miss Game 5 and then have the Bye week to get in shape before Game 6.

If they keep him on the PUP he can't even practice until after the Bye Week at the earliest.

No training camp AND banned from the facilities through week 4? I doubt he'll be back in just 2 weeks.

I guess it depends how bad we need that extra Roster spot.

We'll still have him for 10 games if we do this.

I don't know. If we do that with his fragile mindset, he might curl up, and start flailing around. Then quit on us.

Yeah, but you lose him for at least 4 games no matter how you cut it. If they put him on PUP they save a roster spot and that may be valuable to them if they have injuries and need to sign a player for a short while until they get their guy back.

If they lose a RB for 4-6 weeks they may wish to sign a vet after game one while keeping the RB on the active roster. If Ro is on PUP then that's not too hard to do.

And they must put him on the regular season PUP right away once the season starts otherwise they miss that opportunity.

yes you lose him for 4 games everything else is an "If" what if it is the LB spot that sustains injury?

So here's a guy who quit football twice, came here last year, barely practiced in camp, played well early in the season, tailed off dramatically as the season wore on, hurt his knee and got surgery, chose to rehab in Alabama with no consultation from Cowboys trainers, mysteriously had his house burn down which was up for sale, got caught with illegal substances, got caught again, hasn't practiced yet in camp....

And after a four-week hiatus from Valley Ranch, folks think he's going to show up in perfect shape, ready to go mentally, and dominate through the rest of the season, playoffs, and Super Bowl, with nary another incident throughout.

There's a better chance that the Commanders win the division than that happening.

You have an extra roster spot to use anywhere you like.

Yes I know, Dallas may put him on the pup then again they may want him back as soon as they can have him back. Either is possible. The what if there is always a what if. McClain is a damn good MLB I just think they may want him back as soon as they can we will see. There is not right or wrong answer since no one knows what the future is

It is only a 1 game difference because of the bye week.

But it is 2 extra weeks of practice.

4 game suspension- activate Oct 5th. If he is inactive for Game 5 he plays Game 6 on Oct 25th

PUP list- he misses 42 days, can't practice until Oct 18th. That is only 6 days before Game 6.

This. What in the world about Rolando McClain makes anybody here on CZ think he is going to come back raring to go from PUP/Suspension/whatever?

He would find a way to miss practice anyway...
