The average franchise quarterback compensation will continue to rise. Of course, that upward trend would take a hit if the industry hits a breakeven point, where television and overall revenue top off or even start to decline.

A significant number of outsiders fiercely latch onto the merit based system for how professional athletes, and quarterbacks in particular, are paid. It is not the entire approach taken by front offices in any sport. In short, more quarterbacks, who are judged unworthy of getting 'huge' contracts, shall still be getting huge contracts.

On this topic, economics remains unbeaten.
Daniel Jones would be the exception. The Giants offered a very average QB a below market contract and he accepted a lessor deal than Dak got two years ago and much less than the recent market setters got.

Then there is Derek Carr and his new deal with the Saints. Again, a lessor deal then Dak got two years ago and much less than the recent market setters got.

I personally think Dak is more in line with these two examples rather than a guy who should expect to reset the market like some other recent contracts have done.

I agree....he shouldn't set the market. He hasn't earned that. Let's hope he does this year.

True but you know a owner is going to test that theory and Cowboys have a good excuse to do it.
lol. Any owner can test that theory to their hearts' content. That is what free agency and the market is all about.

If an owner refuses to pay, the player hit free agency. If the market refuses to pay, the player does not get compensated according to their wishes.

None of that supports a theory that an owner or owners (plural) shall begin rejecting undercutting those players' contractual demands, for whom they value. An owner or owners' sense of value of a player is the key. They will continue to pay in order to secure the player's services as they value it.

Then again, owners could start colluding together and collectively start restricting how much they will pay prized players. The players union will love that and will see the owners in court for doing so.

I don't think it is a slam dunk that Jerry extends him personally. I think that will be decided on how he plays this year. Here's the breakdown I posted in a similar thread:

https://cowboyszone.com/threads/pft-dak-has-jerry-jones-in-checkmate.513442/post-12904646

"You have to look at the cap over time not year by year because the team can always restructure contracts to move money back. If we want to cut Dak next year, the cap won’t be a reason not to and in fact we save $34M over the next two years If we cut him.

If we let him play out his contract his cap hits are:
2024 $59.5M; 2025 $36.5M

If we cut him next year his cap hits are:
2024 $25.5M; 2025 $36.5M or $34M less

now if we extend him the savings next year isn’t what people are thinking because almost half of next years cap hit is bonuses already paid out in prior years and that can’t be touched from a cap perspective and there is also a $5M roster bonus that will likely be earned before we are able to extend him. So that means next years cap hit is $30.5M plus 1/5 of his signing bonus on the new deal. So even if the bonus is only $20m and split over 5 years that makes next years cap hit $34.5M or $9M more than if we cut him and the $36.5M still left (25 and 26) doesn’t go away either although the $11M in 2026 stays there instead of accelerating into 2025. Now add to that the SB and at least a $1M salary and that makes 2025 cap hit at least $30M. The biggest problem is if you do this on a 4 year $200M extension and through the first two years have only allocated a total of $9M that means in the next two years (plus a 3rd for cap purposes after he is gone) you still need to allocate $191M and don’t forget the $11M still left in 2026.

so the worst thing we can do for our cap is extend Dak. If we extend him it’s because the team thinks we have a better chance to win with him because giving him another huge deal will absolutely crush our cap a few years from now. Don’t believe Dak has us over a barrel at all. Lastly don’t forget we can easily clear a lot of room next year by restructuring different players if we have to. Don’t worry about the 2024 cap worry about the 2026/7 cap when all of our young players are in the middle of their new deals and beyond the first couple of low cap hit years if we are still paying Dak a huge salary"

Who would have thought Zeke would have received the last big running back contract. The fans are turning on Dak and Russ because of their contracts. The momentum is there to take a stand. Especially if San Francisco wins the Super Bowl and teams like Baltimore, Chargers, Cincinnati fail. You notice that nobody has cracked Watson contract. I can’t see anyone on the horizon catching him.

oh wait.

Daniel Jones' contract extension was four years, $160 million, $82 million fully guaranteed.

Derek Carr's contract was four years, $150 million, $100,000,000 guaranteed.

So, these are considered exceptions of average quarterback compensation because their contractual terms were, in retrospect, ___% less than Dak Prescott's?

Apologies. My perspective was discussing how franchise quarterbacks' compensation would not be taking significantly smaller cuts of team salary caps... ever again. My discussion point cannot counter this type of stance.

I would ask everyone to disregard my previous comments on the matter.

I don’t pretend to know what Jerry does with Dak. My gut feeling is a three-year extension but I hope it’s not until after the playoffs. It would suck if he extends him before December then he has another bad game in the playoffs before the NFC championship game. He should prove his worth this postseason, do well then by all means extend him. Chomps the bit again, start looking for a way out. BTW, I don’t think Lance is the answer either.

That’s the point.

You DONT KNOW if Lance is the answer.

You KNOW Daks not.

And that’s enough to move on.

I'd guess it's a 98% chance the Cowboys extend Dak after this season, but if he has a season similar to last year there's a 2% chance Jerry gets fed up and makes a move.

Jerry expected more for his investment than he has gotten with Dak. He thinks he has a Super Bowl roster and there are people outside of the organization who agree.

This is a big season. There are young stars to pay next year. If you think Jerry made the Lance trade just to eventually replace Cooper Rush then you have a different view of Jerry than mine. He bought a lottery ticket. He's made his fortune by not being afraid to take risks.

Let's try this.

No posts created about account betting on the open forum.

No posts stating what real or imagined actions have been taken by the staff.

No thread bans have been issued. Let's see how this plays out. Okay. Go.

I’d rather listen to a bland Dak interview than any crappy Van Halen song.

I gonged you for being a terrible comedian! Try again because if there was truth to that, say if my favorite group is Poison, then yes, that would be the truth, and it would hurt. But that don't bother me because that's not the truth. What's your favorite band?

You better recognize, son!

Running back contracts have taken a hit because this era of the game has diminished the value of the position in today's offense.

Fans can turn on any player they desire. Fans do not negotiate, authorize and compensate player contracts.

Yeah I still think the odds are that Dak gets a nice new extension, however this seems like the first time that moving on is an actual possibility. Still need an actual replacement option to present itself. That COULD be Trey Lance, but that comes with a ton of things to fall right over the next 6 months.
.
.
As long as Prescott plays and doesn't throw a lot of picks, Lance won't get much if any playing time and the Cowboys won't ship off Prescott and play Rush or Lance with no or very little reps with he starters. The Prescott haters aren't going to like it but he will be with the Cowboys for several more years.

True.

But Lance ain't it. He's a mental bust.
