ESPN Dallas: Cowboys could trade down in draft

Josh Brent is looking like a real NT, he could end up being a major steal.

That would solve some issues wouldn't it. I guess he has three games to show it.

I dunno, guess I'm in a minority.

I agree, IF it makes sense to trade down because there simply are NO players worth the pick in the current slot, fine.

But mostly, I hate the idea of trading down for additional picks.

The NFL is a league that is driven by impact players. Every good team has a few impact players who can separate themselves from the crowd and make plays in a big situation. The rest of the rosters are pretty much interchangeable with the exception of the impact guys.

If anything, I've always preferred trading up to grab an impact guy...like, oh, Dez Bryant for instance.

Seeing him this yr (especially the last couple of games) might not tell you anything. If he isnt ready to play, he'd look awful and you'd assume you needed more help.

It would give you an indication of where hes at. It can help you prioritize the position. As it is now we need both a starting G and T equally. We have no Sam Young at G/C so they could bump RT down 1 peg on the needs list if he shows he has a little something.

Might not tell the fans anything, but I would hope the coaches and staff know better.

They see him every day in practice.

I'm guessing if they thought he could play right now, they'd get him out there.

For true? Miles Austin, Sean Lee, and Tashard Choice disagree

I don't wanna see us move down again ever with how poorly we drafted when doing that in recent history

the whole 09 draft class is a great example of what we get our selves into when we start doing that

They like Costa at C alot, but he's in the same boat as Young. Just isnt ready.

Sean Lee was hurt alot early on, missed alot of camp. Playing behind two guys who both had outstanding seasons last yr. Now that he's healthy he's getting more and more reps.

Tashard Choice looked really good vs Indy, but then got all of Barber's reps vs Philly and did nothing. Most of this season (other than Indy) when he's got reps, he did nothing.

Austin there's not much excuse for, but some players do grab the bull by the horns when they get a shot, and run with it. Happens to teams all around the league.

Is there anyone they dont like? What does that mean? I had people telling me they loved Jason Williams.

I dont have anything against Costa. His versatility should make him roster-worthy. I just dont think he has starter potential but if they really do like him then lets see him get a game at guard. Its not like he could do much worse than Davis

They must have put Sean Lee in right on time then, as soon as he gets in there hes all over the field. Crazy timing.

Barber doesnt have it like Choice does, not anymore.

This.... :hammer:

It doesn't get any simpler than that. If there's a stud that you have a chance to get.......YOU GET HIM!!!!!!

Steven Jackson is on the board.....

TRADE DOWN!!!!!!

trade down around 15, get Brandon Harris (in my opinion, there isn't much separating this dude from Prince Or P.P), while adding a 2nd rounder. Add Demarcus love and Rahim Moore in the second.

Draft is a success already, and we still have 5 more rounds.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that there will be a Rookie Wage Scale Adjustment going on with the new CBA. You're not hearing a lot about it now, but it will happen. The "Points Chart" that Jimmy developed is/was severely outdated, but will be obsolete once the new rookie wage "scale" comes about.

As a result higher draft picks will be even more valuable. So I would expect to see more given to get them. Until the exact specifics are known, it would be hard to evaluate what they are worth. But it is coming.

It takes two to tango though. Regardless of where you are you need to find a trading partner willing to give up the picks to move there. The NFL and NFLPA have interests here. Future rookies do not. Thats why you will see a very noticeable shift in the value of higher draft picks.

Very good point.

Absolutely true. I think a lot of people are in love with trading down because that's where OL are rated, but I'm of the opinion if a potential impact defender is available early, you take him and then, if it works out, trade up to get the OLineman you wanted to trade down for. Or if you can't trade up, so be it.

I don't think anyone can make the case - outside of possibly QB and WR - that there is a stud player at any position the Cowboys can disregard because of need. And I would argue no position period.

I agree with the first but not the second part of your post. Yes, we're very likely to find a great defensive player waiting for us at our spot in the draft so don't trade down, please. There is no way I would take a stud WR in the draft with the 10th (about) pick in this draft. No way. Not with this many needs and our current crop of WRs. When people espouse the 'BPA Period' philosophy I am always immediately suspicious. I think very few teams actually mean it when they say this. Almost every team in the league has positions they're not going to draft for in the first round, no matter what they say. I'm all for the Modifed BPA philosophy -- take the BPA except for certain positions -- and I suspect that's what most draft professionals really mean when they say BPA.

IRVING -- If the season ended today, the Cowboys would get a Top 10 pick in the draft. Dallas is tied with Arizona and San Francisco for picks six or seven.

NFL draft expert Mel Kiper thinks the Cowboys might trade down here because the offensive line is a need. But Kiper projects some offensive linemen to go later in the first round so moving down isn't out of the question.

Read what else Kiper thinks: http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/cowboys/post/_/id/4675958/cowboys-could-trade-down-in-draft

That's kiper assuming OT is our #1 priority....I don't think it is. We have our LT....RT or OG isn't that hard to find in free agency or 2nd and 3rd rounds. I think our priority is going to be DL, ILB, or DB
