ESPN: McCarthy wouldn't budge from 5 yrs, Joneses wouldn't budge from 3 yrs

I think that's dumb if that is how they see it. Mike was either the right guy or not. They clearly thought he was. No disagreement that it could take a year or so to know if the next DC would be the right guy to pair with him or not. But since Zimmer wasn't coming back they weren't going to give Mike the same grace they would give a 1st time head coach? Then why even try to extend Mike?
Exactly. If he's not your guy, let him go after Green Bay or after this year (which they helped to be crappy by doing nothing with the roster) and prep to launch a proper search for a head coach. But they brought him back with no backup plan and then balked at Mike wanting security to make it worth it due to their tomfoolery while he was here.

Had to be more than contract length involved.
Oh I agree. As someone mentioned, there was probably roster control as part of any deal. He had the likes of Lance and Zeke foisted upon him in addition to their inaction last off-season. You're already starting from behind when they're filling roster spots for you with dead weight.

I wonder if Witten was really considered to be TE coach? So much media fodder to sift through.

More proof of the circus they are running.

And just me, I'm suspicious that Joneses started at 2 but ultimately said they'd be willing to do 3. That's why, then, they couldn't get to a compromise at 4 yrs.

I admire Mike for sticking to his guns, because if I were him, I'd consider 2 to be an insult, and 3 not sufficient. 4 would have been my minimum.

At the same time, I cannot not admire Joneses for capping it at 3. If I were them, I would have done exactly the same thing. If I'm just looking for someone who could win regular season games, then I'd be willing to do 4, but the prospect of more of the same post season futility would just be too much. In fact, it is only because Mike McCarthy does have a SB ring (attesting to the fact it's plausible he could have a break through) that I'd be willing to go beyond 2.

To me, they were both right.

well now MM has 0 years so he should have taken the 3 but I'm glad he didn't. It was time to move on.

This is true but Vrabel and Carroll sat out and landed jobs. Sometimes timing is everything ......you never know. By my way too early count .....2026 could have 7-8 openings
McCarthy sat out a year and got the Cowboys job but I believe they were the only team that interviewed him. They’ll be more young coordinators available next season he’ll have to compete with. McCarthy is an old retread. Not many teams are going to care that he won a SB 14 years ago with a young Aaron Rodgers.

yeah, he was totally being disrespected. He was already with the team for 5 years & Jerry offered another 3. Thats 8 years and more than enough time to win something. Let's also look at his 1st year & this last year. Both were awful. The 3 in the middle were decent regular seasons and pathetic showings in the playoffs. He should have taken the 3 extra years and kissed Jerry's feet.

Oh, and one more point. After being fired from GB nobody was banging his door down. He was out basically begging for a HC job. Jerry gave him a shot. He failed. Offered him another 3 years and got greedy. Now he has no job. Next year he will be on the NFL corner begging for another sucker.

Not to mention the majority of Cowboy fan base wanted him fired during the season.

so they were talking the morning on the fan that the Archer report this thread is about was false. They never even got to the point of discussing years. I cant remember if it was Shan Shariff that said that or RJ but they were discussing this.

Here's my issue with all this - and with Jerry and Stephen in particular - you first decide if McCarthy is your guy. If he is, give him a contract that reflects that. If he isn't, then part ways and find your guy. Only wanting to give him two years, and grudgingly going to three, says you're not fully confident in him. If so, why even bring him back at all?
Ppl who barely post, post well. I agree.

Whatever.

I don’t blame the team for not wanting to give MM five years….and I don’t blame MM for asking for a lot to continue to put up with Jerry’s crap.

I don’t care who they hire…until they realize that under paid coaches that don’t mind being constantly undermined aren’t going to work miracles with an inferior roster, none of it much matters.

The two clowns seem to want the best of all sides in return for cheap. Doesn’t seem like much more than entitled billionaires used to getting what they want in life.
