Nothing? How about winning the most regular season games in any 5-year period in Cowboys history under one coach, not named Landry?

How many Cowboys head coaches even got 5 years? Off my head, I think the total list is Landry, Jimmy, Garrett, and McCarthy.

JJ gets dinged in this metric for his 1-15 1989 season, and Garrett is a similar mediocrity to McCarthy.

This is true but Vrabel and Carroll sat out and landed jobs. Sometimes timing is everything ......you never know. By my way too early count .....2026 could have 7-8 openings
If the Cowboys win less than seven games next season, which is likely even if Dak can stay healthy, McCarthy’s stock will go up. Sitting out like other experienced NFL head coaches have done allows McCarthy to talk to any team, at any time. Insisting Jerry gives him what he wants or no deal is a smart move by McCarthy.

Happy for Mike. Obviously, he did what was best for him not giving in to the pygmy caballero we call Booger.

When you want a commitment you have to be willing to commit.

Some people like their loaf without looking like an owned punk. Especially if there's more than one store to get it from.
Problem is he already was an owned punk at home against Green Bay in that playoff game.

That outing and his lack of being able to discipline the team and control the penalty problem have left other franchises not exactly beating the door down for his services.

Once again, they knew what McCarthy's limit was going in, they didn't want the guy back. This way they didn't look like the bad guys. Typical Jones move

The NFL is such that even great coaches can eventually get kicked to the curb. McCarthy was a good but not an elite head coach over his career to date, and considering his short-comings, he got a fair offer from the Cowboys.
Exactly at the end of the day he lied to get his job he didn't accomplish what he was brought here to do.
Nobody's beating the door down for his services.
And he goes from 8 million a year to nothing hopefully his lifestyle can take that hit.
In my mind you take the 3 years and if you do a good job you will get extended if you don't you won't be any worse off than you are now

Sometimes a man has to have the stones to walk away when the offer is below what you believe you're worth. Men of reknown are seldom the "just be grateful" types.
this is a guy who lied about watching film etc. i have a feeling he thought chicago was all the leverage he needed, and that he could just hop into their opening if things didn't shake out how he wanted in dallas. i don't think it was stones at all.

Nope. Self-respect is worth something. Even if you're just a peon like me.

And when you already have millions in your bank account, the monetary thing is especially less important.

He made the right decision for him. And that's all that's important.
don't buy it for a second lol. he played chicken and lost.

But he has dignity. You'll always find another job...if he even needs another job. You can't buy dignity.
you won't "always find another job" in the nfl. i'm one of the guys that really likes mike, but dignity isn't something that springs to mind. there's zero chance he'd rather be on the couch than coaching the cowboys next year. he over played his hand.

opinion there's more to this story that hasnt surfaced yet, the hang up was mike mccarthy was being to hand the play call of duties over to Brian schottenheimer, who would be the FULL OC and make changes to the offensive staff and scheme.
The untrue rumor was he was being forced to take Witten but I don't believe that was it...its was BS to OC and PC..

MM ego was hurt demanded more years and IMHO) fans got lucky they parted ways,,

we need to change and even if it's just a parallel move or it's not better on the surface it was change in my opinion that was very needed...

Doesn't seem MM agrees with you. He walked rather than take 3 years...so no...it's not "zero chance" and BOTH SIDES overplayed their hands. The Cowboys wanted Mike - 3 years, but they wanted him didn't interview other coaches and didn't have a plan in place - and then settled for his protege assistant.

And that is the risk...he may not find another head coaching job. But DIGNITY demands you take that risk.

I don't think he anticipated being on the couch. I think he thought the Bears would hire him, or the Cowboys would budge. But all speculation on my end of course. Bet he'd jump at 3 years now though.

Again, but he took the risk...you're making my point. Either way, he said "No" to the Cowboys. You can "bet he'd take 3 years"...but that means there's a CHANCE he would walk away...otherwise there's no bet.

So saying, "there's zero chance" is just you projecting how you would feel in that situation. But you and I have not won a SB, been publicly humiliated by Jerry, dealt with Dak, etc....so...

yeah I said that it was all speculation on my end. that's been established. and i didn't say he wouldn't say no to the cowboys, i said he would rather have a three year deal than be unemployed.

And that has been the problem w/ all coaches except Tuna. Think about that..............................

MM is rich. Has millions. Would you really want to be in a job you absolutely despise if you have so much money that you don't have to work if you don't want to?

No, I don't think so. I think he wanted out of this mess of an org. And wanted to be well paid long term if he was to stay.
