ESPN: McCarthy wouldn't budge from 5 yrs, Joneses wouldn't budge from 3 yrs

The NFL is such that even great coaches can eventually get kicked to the curb. McCarthy was a good but not an elite head coach over his career to date, and considering his short-comings, he got a fair offer from the Cowboys.

At the end of the day Jerry's still a billionaire and doesn't care.

Mike is unemployed and may regret not taking the 3 years

Because McCarthy already had five years to get it done. There's a big difference in nine years and four for a head coach. It can take a couple of years just to get the staff you want. For example, at first we hired Mike Nolan as defensive coordinator for McCarthy because McCarthy had a relationship with him and he was available. He failed and Quinn became available. Some of these coaches may ultimately just be placeholders. Same with some players. You want to fix everything, but especially with this front office, you may have to do it in phases. New coach gets that opportunity. Extended coach should already have most of what he needs in place to contend after five years.
I think that's dumb if that is how they see it. Mike was either the right guy or not. They clearly thought he was. No disagreement that it could take a year or so to know if the next DC would be the right guy to pair with him or not. But since Zimmer wasn't coming back they weren't going to give Mike the same grace they would give a 1st time head coach? Then why even try to extend Mike?

We were going to have another HC in 3-5 years anyway after running back the same team we had this year.

And just me, I'm suspicious that Joneses started at 2 but ultimately said they'd be willing to do 3. That's why, then, they couldn't get to a compromise at 4 yrs.

I admire Mike for sticking to his guns, because if I were him, I'd consider 2 to be an insult, and 3 not sufficient. 4 would have been my minimum.

At the same time, I cannot not admire Joneses for capping it at 3. If I were them, I would have done exactly the same thing. If I'm just looking for someone who could win regular season games, then I'd be willing to do 4, but the prospect of more of the same post season futility would just be too much. In fact, it is only because Mike McCarthy does have a SB ring (attesting to the fact it's plausible he could have a break through) that I'd be willing to go beyond 2.

To me, they were both right.

Thank Goodness McCarthy wouldn't budge...

MM stuck to his guns b/c he probably figured that if he had to work for these clowns , it was going to be worth his trouble. I'm sure it was more than just years. But, the bigger problem was the Cowboys had no plan B. They were not prepared for a robust head coaching search. We interviewed 4 guys (!) which is kinda insane.

Mike was smart here

His reputation already getting tarnished by dumb Jerry decisions causing his coaching record to tank

He basically drew a line in the sand and said it’s only worth it to him under certain conditions
I suspect he also asked for more roster control which is what he was asking for in New Orleans

Mike has a ton of money and a great family. No reason to sign on for additional 2-3 years unless he feels like it sets himself up for success

Right. Why bother with denying him the Bears interview while they diddled around with contract negotiations. They may have been trying to force him to just be a walk around HC and let Shotty call the signals. After all, he forced the issue and got rid of their wunderkind Kellen Moore. Wonder how that feels now with KM leading the offensive parade for the Eagles Super Bowl game.

There’s no assurances they’ll be another opportunity. He was available and no one wanted him.
This is true but Vrabel and Carroll sat out and landed jobs. Sometimes timing is everything ......you never know. By my way too early count .....2026 could have 7-8 openings

Three years would have him at a disadvantage in attracting quality coordinators who as a rule get 3-year contracts.

He will get another HC job if he wants it
Vrabel was considered a top candidate this year
Everyone was saying the same thing about him after he got fired (nobody wants him)

You are exactly right...........from what I have heard, he was the leading guy for the Bears if Johnson had signed elsewhere. Look at Dan Quinn, he was the Commanders' 3rd choice after McDonald and Johnson turned them down.

It was a win-win for Big Mac. If they signed him, he’d get his five-year deal. If they didn’t, I doubt he lost any sleep walking away from this clown show, which, is exactly what happened.

I find it funny that some are acting like him being out of work is a big deal. The guy is worth $9–$10 million. He’ll be just fine. And with new NFL opportunities every season, it’s only a matter of time before he lands somewhere else. If not, enjoy retirement.
