What? Payton is not with the Cowboys because the Saints offered him a head coaching job. Was Jerry supposed to get rid of Parcells and name Payton as the head coach in response to the Saints interviewing Payton? I suppose Jerry could have offered more money to Payton and promised him the head coaching job after Parcells eventually called it quits. That doesn't mean it would have worked. Payton could have said no and still took the job in New Orleans. There are only 32 head coaching jobs in the NFL. You get a chance to take over one, you just may take it. You never know when that chance will come back around.
Great post and everyone that says 'why did we get rid of Payton?' needs to read it. It's amazing how people don't understand the situation with the Cowboys and Payton.

Garrett has had more success as an OC than Payton did, but people want to burn him at the stake because of his hair color. Garrett's 3 years as our OC top Payton's top 3 years from the Cowboys and Giants combined.

I actually think it is probably because he is seen as the eventual Head Coach and Payton it was never really on the table the same way. If it had been he probably would have been hated too and the rueing and told you so's would have been more fervent.

I am very happy for Sean Payton. He deserves this and he showed very real guts last night. Had it failed, similar to Belichick's gamble, it would have backfired badly and people would be calling him an idiot. The line between genius and fool is so short.
