Reality, I get it...I really do. Again, Cottrell wasn't hired 2 weeks prior to the HC and I also understand that Jones had a small window to work with regarding JG. I guess you can't see the difference but I don't expect you too.

Also, in your article, you'll find this: "Team President Dean Spanos and Smith already have decided they will not allow assistants to leave now but instead will leave it up to the new head coach whom he wants to retain. All the assistants are under contract through next season."

There's a novel concept.......

You mean like telling Vinson Brown to pound sand?

same article...........

One agent who advises coaches noted yesterday that assistants being thrust on incoming head coaches is increasingly common.

“In the past few years teams are more amenable to coaches who are open to take suggestions regarding their staff,” the agent said. “That is not the issue people think it is. Those days are over. There is much more collaboration now.”

Mike Ditka inherited 9 coaches on the Bears?

Did Dungy clean house when he came into Indy?

How did Zimmer appear on BP's staff?

How about Capers as the Miami DC?

Tomlin fire LeBeau in Pittsburgh?

Herm Edwards clean house of the offensive staff in KC?

Happens all over the league, every year.

I saw that. I also know that it is about a week later than the reports that had already surfaced about Cottrell replacing Wade Phillips even before Marty was fired.

You've got the cart before the horse and assume Cottrell is a Norv hire, and the GM had no input in it in contrast to Jerry hiring Garrett before he hired the Head Coach.

Simply not true.

while all of this is very true, it appears there are some thing that while they are "common practice" and you can find the same examples on every NFL team every year, it's still meddeling when jerry does it simply because jerry did it.

i'm starting to get it now. : )

i gotta admit i was shocked that they hired Turner... Turner bottomline is just not a very good HC and while he might make the playoffs because of all the talent that the Chargers have, he still wont win a SB which ultimately will make Turner a failure in SD

It's February 19th. It's not like they were spoiled for choice.

They spent a week interviewing 5+ candidates. The only one not on the market that was available in the month before was Phillips. Seriously, their choices weren't all that limited.

Good choices. Certainly you could tell that was implied.

Your post was about when they were interviewing. If they had interviewed directly after their playoff loss, they wouldn't have had more to choose from except for Wade.

By mid-February, there aren't a lot of sexy names left to choose from. It's not a coincidence that Norv interviewed with the last two teams looking for a head coach instead of say Pittsburgh, Atlanta, Arizona or Miami. The only teams that sniffed around Norv were the ones that were "stuck" (Dallas, due to Bill's footdragging, and SD, due to the surprise firing).

*sigh*

It's like talking to a brick wall. Even when you explain something in clear, plain English, it's just ignored.

Sigh. Disagreeing with bbgun for the sake of disagreement. In other words, a hopeless jerk. Please continue your desperate cry for attention.

Turner could be the man in San Diego

Jay Glazer / FOXSports.com
Posted: 9 hours ago

The San Diego Chargers are leaning toward a new head coach and it's the man everyone thought was going to be head coach of Dallas.

FOXSports.com has learned that the Chargers are talking to Norv Turner as if they are looking to hire him as their head coach. Sources contend that Turner is leaning toward hiring Ted Cottrell, a long-time defensive NFL coach, to run the Chargers defense. Cottrell worked in the league office this past season but is one of the best minds in the league in running a 3-4 scheme.

Oddly, earlier in the day based off of different information, Rex Ryan appeared to be the leading candidate to get the job. What or if anything happened to change that remains to be seen.

Turner was long assumed to be the man the Jones boys hired to replace Bill Parcells as head coach, but the Cowboys sent Turner back to the Bay without a new job or a new title. That title and job may now come three weeks later in the best city in America to "have to" work in — sunny San Diego.

General Manager A.J. Smith had talks with Turner late this evening, talks that sounded as if Turner was the team's choice. In fact, they even talked contract figures.

Turner was the Chargers offensive coordinator during LaDainian Tomlinson's rookie year and now will be in charge of an offense that needs to find even more ways for Tomlinson to work his magic.

Turner was extremely close to landing the Cowboys gig that eventually went to Wade Phillips, the man Cottrell may replace in San Diego now. When contacted, Turner's current boss Mike Nolan said he had not "heard a thing" from Turner but was hoping to if in fact Turner was their choice.

Calls to Smith and Turner were not returned.

Awe, shucks, ya'll mean to tell me that A.J. Smith didn't hire Barry Switzer?;)

Norv is a better coach for that team than Marty...Norv gets a bad wrap for coaching in two terrible places before, but he's gonna be coaching by far his best tem ever next yr...unless they have a bunch of injuries I'll be shocked if they dont win 11 or 12 games

and he'll really do wonders for Phillip Rivers
