With final start Sunday, Matt Cassel hopes to be Cowboy in future

IRVING, Texas -- If all goes as expected, Sunday will mark Matt Cassel's final start this year as the Dallas Cowboys' quarterback.

Tony Romo will return from a broken collarbone Nov. 22 against the Miami Dolphins, which will put Cassel back to a reserve role.

"I don't know what the future holds," Cassel said. "Obviously, Tony is coming back next week and when he gets back, he's back but at the same time I would love to finish on a winning note and obviously teams, we'd all to win, so again all of our focus has gone into this week. We're not even thinking about next week when Tony gets back. We're just focused on the task at hand, which is a good football team this week."

I think Cassel is a really solid backup to have.

I just think we need more of a playmaker type with Garretts scheme.

I'd like a guy that can do more with his legs behind Romo. A Colt McCoy type.

We need a guy who can make plays outside of the scheme as our backup.

Cassel is a 3rd stringer with a weak arm. Time to draft Romo's replacement.

I wouldn't be opposed.. but they def need a young prospect in the mix.

Me either.

I think with this.....'fiasco', under his belt and some off season work..........he may be alright as a backup.

He has looked better each week, IMO.

Do you know something the rest of us don't? Jerry is expecting Romo to be our starting QB for the next 6 years, so it's too early to be drafting his replacement.

If Cassell had been here through TC instead of Weeden, we would have won at least 2-3 of last 6 games

This is only 1 of many places where Garrett has been unable to make sound decisions to the detriment of the team

No one thinks six, but 3 to 4 isn't unreasonable with today's rules. Who is there to draft that's so great to backup for years, and then pay QB money?

I'm telling you, even if we had the #1 pick in the draft, chances are EXTREMELY slim he'll EVER be as good as Romo and he sure as hell won't save our season if Romo goes down again.

So, I say bring Cassel back. Let him be in the same system again and get all those Wednesday practices with the 1s. Use our picks on the dozen other talent blackholes we have.

Please don't pretend to speak for everyone, some folks take serious what the FO says. If it's reasonable to thing Romo will be around for 3 to 4 more seasons, then why would you draft his replacement now? This league doesn't groom QBs anymore, the good ones start as a rookie.

Of course we need to draft someone but I'm not opposed to Cassel being the backup next year. He'd be great in a spot start. Just don't need him for more than a game or 2. This defense needs to be as good as advertised. To date, they haven't.

Cassel was competing for the starting job in Buffalo in camp, so he wasn't a realistic option here at that point.

Not sure I agree with your point, anyway, given his play in the NY and SEA games. Take away the focus PHI put on Dez last week and put it on Beasley, and that game might have been a different story, too.

Cassel is not the problem. Backup QB is not the problem. The offensive scheme is the problem. If we had a scheme that put these players in a position to succeed we would have won at least 3 or 4 games without Romo. Such a vanilla offense. We can't tell with Romo back there because he is a wizard but with someone less competent at the position it is so obvious (as we have seen). We also need a playmaker to replace the horrid Williams (Josh Gordon please)
