And all of those Hall of Famers wouldnt have even be able to compete with the players Farve and company had to play against. The point is, both had great teams around them.

It's my contention that Starr's surrounding cast was much better than Favre's, thats the simple answer to what I meant when I said Starr had alot of help.

Why not? marino was probably the most gifted QB ever. If he had any semblence of a running game and a half decent WR core, he would have been rolling in titles.

You are definitely on point with your list. I agree with Rickey over Archie. Archie might be the most popular Saint of all time but Rickey was definitely the best player.

Same for Catch 22 over the Dodger. Lilly should be a very close second but we are so fortunate to have so many to choose from. Not sure about Deion being so high on the list though. Long time Cowboys like Irvin, Everson, Erik Williams, Calvin Hill, belong on the list before a hired gun like Deion. I won't take anything away from him on the field but personally I never considered him a true Blue Cowboy. He was a hired gun who at one time was our pyriah and then finally saw the light and come from the Dark Side.

I would go Derrick Thomas over Bobby Bell for the Chiefs.
thanks man, appreciate the support of my list.. and you know whats funny? I actually meant to put Thomas over Bell for the Chiefs.. I must have had a brain fart when I did the list and accidentally put Bell cause he was the other finalist I had narrowed it down to.. funny though, both of them were 9 time Pro Bowlers for the Chiefs.. Bell was more diverse, but Thomas was more dominating as a sack artist.. so I would give the slight edge to Thomas..

HH31, It's like saying you'd take Peyton Manning over Roger. Numbers look great but it's all about winning and being a field general and leading your team when the chips are down.

Lets look at it like this... put Smith (in his prime) on the 77 team with Dorsett (rookie year).
How much playing time would Smith get because we all know how Dorsett exploded onto the scene with his speed and all.
Now lets put Roger (in his prime) on the 89 team with Troy (rookie year). Does Troy even see the field? I bet we would win more than 1 game.

OK, wanted to jump on here real quick again and "defend" the most talked about things on my list..

1. for the last time, Emmitt's numbers and his winning championships are greater than Staubach's.. Ive already stated my case here, so i wont go over it again.. but I would like to address this issue-- Emmitt is always talked about in the short list of greatest runningbacks of all-time.. Brown, Payton, Emmitt, and Sanders.. thats it, those are the four.. as much as it pains Cowboys fans to hear it, Staubach is not ever mentioned in the short list of greatest QBs ever.. its Montana, Elway, Unitas, and Marino.. thats it, those are the four.. Emmitt accomplished more on the field, in both stats and championships, than any player in NFL history besides Jerry Rice.. Cowboys fans need to embrace this, its remarkable.. last but not least-- Lilly, again, is second place, ahead of Roger..

2. Favre vs Starr-- you could argue these two forever, its really close.. but I would go with Favre.. and I think that most Packers fans would to.. but again, Favre isnt my choice as greatest Packer ever.. I gotta go with Hutson.. go back and look at my argument for more details..

3. Deion-- much has been said about my ranking him the 7th greatest Cowboy ever.. here's the deal.. I truly believe that people will remember him as a Falcon AND a Cowboy.. he will probably enter the Hall as both, not as a Commander, 49er, or Raven.. and for that reason, I considered him a Cowboy when making this list.. and while he was here, he was DOMINANT.. he is considered the greatest cover corner to EVER play.. as a matter of fact, had he played his entire career here, I would put him even higher on the list, probably 3rd or so..

huh?? sorry man, this is a bad argument.. of course Roger in his prime would do a lot better and get all the playing time over a rookie Aikman.. as far as Emmitt and Dorsett, Emmitt is a better back than Dorsett, so he would get the majority of the snaps.. I dont really see what you are going for here.. nobody is really debating Troy vs Roger or Emmitt vs Dorsett.. if you are using it as a way of arguing Roger vs Emmitt, I think you are going about it wrong..

My whole point is that when Dorsett came into the league he was lightning in a bottle. With his speed there was no keeping him off the field. Smith would have been lucky to have seen 200 carries.

I agree with 4 miler.... Roger over Aikman and Dorsett over Smith.

I love Aikman as a Qb but give the edge to Staubach due to coming up HUGE in the clutch and for his ability to scramble.

Emmitt is great but to me his lack of speed hurts him the most when you talk about all time rbs... He could do everything else and is an all timer....

Roger went to just as many SB's as Elway, won as many, had about the same skills set and both were great leaders and great in the clutch.

However, in my eyes Elway will always be a turd.

Throwing a little hissy fit and forcing the colts to trade him is no different than what Eli did a few years ago to S.D. Only Elway took it to another level when he held out a whole year.

Players should play where they are drafted. The Colts could have really used him.

Can you picture Roger butting heads with any coach (Dan Reeves, Elway) or forcing a trade because he didn't like the team who drafted him (same guy who gave 4 years of his life for this country). Class wins out in the end.

Gotta add that those same people who don't rank RS as a top 5 all time QB are the same people who have been keeping Irvin out of the Hall of Fame. Go with your gut........

First of all, Peyton Manning is a far better passer and overall QB than Staubach was, there is no arguing that.

HOWEVER, Manning chokes in big games, which is why I didnt list him.

If you gave Marino Manning's talent, he would be considered the greatest player in NFL history hands down. Marino didnt not perform in big games, he jsut never got many chances and when he did, his talent level around him failed him, not the other way around.

I understand what you are saying..... I do. In my mind their is no wrong answer.

In the clutch I would feel better with RS that's all. And if I had to start an all time Franchise he would be my first pick. What about you HH31?

I was thinking the same thing.

Marino is one of my all time favs.....give him a running game to go along with the Marks bros and they would have won a lot more games.

Jerry Rice, simply the best player to ever live. Not extremely fast, strong, big or stylish, but no one has ever been able to stop him. At age 40 he was better than half the WRs in football.

After him, Barry Sanders, Lawrence Taylor, and Marino would be the next best picks in my mind.

Remember him however you want to. You enter the hall as a NFL player not just associated with any team. I remember him as a multiple team player who crippled our salary cap for years and helped cause the breakup of our super bowl winning franchise.

After he got hurt, he wasn't the same player ever again. His dominance during his Cowboy days are even less than the 5 years he spent here. He simply just isn't the #7th greatest Cowboy player of all time. Hell, we had many players who went to the pro bowl more years than he was even here.

you are right, stats aren't everything.. but they are a big part of it.. the thing is, the Cowboys' best teams were in the 90s, not the 70s..

thats very debatable
