In a roundtable conversation with former Buc's GM Mark Dominick, Herm Edwards, Louis Roddick and Mel Kiper -- Dominick and Edwards say they would pursue Adrian Peterson over Murray and it's not even close.

In fact, Dominick went on to say if the Cowboys got Peterson they should draft another offensive lineman in the first round. "Nobody would stop that offense."

I know some people say in the current NFL it's hard to be great on both sides of the ball so you might as well be great on one side of the ball.

Personally if I could get Peterson I would but still center my off season on improving the defense.

Chasing Peterson makes sense if he is willing to play for far less than he made previously and on a short-term deal to finish his career as a Cowboy and back in Texas.

Murray knows the offense and is proven in the system and in the locker room. We chase him til someone money whips him and we have to walk away.

You can't just be good one one side of the ball. You can have a good defense and an elite QB. Or a really good defense and an offense that is good in one area.
Or a great offense that is only good versus the run or pass but you can't be a dog on defense or a dog on offense and win it all.

If Dallas HAS to draft OL at 27 that will be a bad scenario but they have to keep all options open. 27 is too far down the draft to target any position.
But that would be far less than ideal for team build. It'd be smarter to select a walk in starter and cheap for four years RB than to use it on an OL... but defense has to be the preference by far if talent is equitable.

Is there a big IF before this discussion?

As in, "go after Peterson IF he actually becomes a FA"

All these guys are wishing they still had NFL jobs. There might be a reason they don't.

The problem is that as-of right now, Peterson can't apply for reinstatement until April 15th. He does not count against the Vikings cap while suspended so they don't have an incentive to cut him prior to April 15th.

People can argue the Pros and Cons of going after Peterson vs signing Murray, but they have to decide on Murray in early March at the beginning of free agency.

If they don't re-sign Murray in March, they have to do it with a plan that does not include Peterson because there would be no guarantee that they can sign him. They can't talk to him while he is under contract with the Vikings.

I don't know Mark Dominick but I know that Herm Edwards is an idiot.

Dominick is too.

He's the guy that pretty much put the Buccaneers at the #1 overall draft pick spot.

But I'm very much interested to see what the judge rules on Peterson case that was heard last Friday.

I don't see how the league can keep him suspended until April. That's clearly spite on their part because he didn't do exactly what they told him when they told him.

I don't think its impossible...depends what they want to do in FA, it's not like they're over the cap.

Peterson has said he would like to stay in Minn. Zimmer wants him as well. Just have to see how this all plays out.

various:
Edwards and Dominick are smarter than most when it comes to football but hardly subject matter experts.
Neither has built a winning team in over a decade.

Louis Riddick is very sharp. And my guess is he ends up in someone's front office or ascending to a lead Media role very shortly.

The AP timeline changes nothing for me.
The order of business is pretty clear.
Negotiate with Murray until you are priced out...
Sign AP or not.
Conduct draft.
If need be hit bargain bin FA market or late cuts.

There will be a lot of RB options.
I have zero fear we will be shut out.

And Jerry has already spoken on record with AP before he ever got in trouble.
Pretty sure they didn't delete each others' cell numbers.
Agents and teams seem to know well in advance of legal windows what is coming.
It is a rule all agents and most teams would violate.

I can't see any way they're willing to pay him $10 million dollars more than the going rate for the position, especially after last year's circumstances.

Keeping him, they'd be signing up for more of:

2015
vikings.png
$12,750,000$15,400,000 $2,400,000
2016

$14,750,000-$15,000,000-
2017

$16,750,000-$17,000,000

Something's gotta give with that contract. Of that I have no doubt.

Anybody that thinks we wants to play for Minn after everything that transpired does not get it. I don't care what Zimm and AP are saying to the public. If we wins his court battle and is reinstated Minn will have to make a decision sooner rather than later. Where he plays next year is obvioulsy a debate but one thing for sure it won't be in Minn.
