Following his ridiculous 2012 season Peterson has as many games under 3.5 yards per carry as he does over 5.0 yards per carry. And he's going to be a 30 year old running back.

Any significant salary cap space needs to be spent on Dez Bryant and on improving the defense. We have a great offensive line where we are going to have great balance offensively even if it is some combination of Dunbar, Williams, Randle, and a draft pick. We now need to have balance on both sides of the ball.

I worry more about pass protection, especially when you have a 35-year old QB with back problems in an offense that needs to give the QB more time to throw because the pass patterns are longer. That and having a good receiver RB is helpful when the defense guards the deep pass well and we can just dump it off to the RB for yards underneath.

Murray in his career has averaged 3.2 catches per game for 22.6 yards. He has also averaged 1 fumble for every 84.9 touches.

Peterson in his career has average 2 catches per game for 16.5 yards. He has also averaged 1 fumble for every 72.9 touches.

I just think unless Murray's price tag is not feasible, it would be a colossal mistake signing Peterson. And we had better have a top quality backup to take over for him on passing downs.

Yes and Peterson is one of the worst pass-blocking backs in the league. Murray isn't great compared to an Ahmad Bradshaw type, but he's better than AP there.

The problem with it is timing. You don't want to hedge your bet on Peterson and miss out on a FA in March.

I think he gets reinstated earlier
Plus I'm not in favor of signing Murray to a long term deal anyway
If we can't get AP, fill needs via FA, there will be a very very good RB in rd 2 or 3 of the draft

I fully expect Peterson's suspension to be lifted by March 10th.

It could work in our favor anyways. If Murray signs somewhere else the best option is AD or the draft(Williams and Randle are good enough to not panic). Other teams will fill their holes at RB, leaving less suitors for AD.

I wouldn't cry if they used that #27 pick on a good swing tackle (provided there wasn't an equally good defensive lineman available).

In a roundtable conversation with former Buc's GM Mark Dominick, Herm Edwards, Louis Roddick and Mel Kiper -- Dominick and Edwards say they would pursue Adrian Peterson over Murray and it's not even close.

In fact, Dominick went on to say if the Cowboys got Peterson they should draft another offensive lineman in the first round. "Nobody would stop that offense."

I know some people say in the current NFL it's hard to be great on both sides of the ball so you might as well be great on one side of the ball.

Personally if I could get Peterson I would but still center my off season on improving the defense.

funny, because the pats won by passing this year and none of their backs averaged more than 6carries/game over the course of the year.

you win with defense. your defense has to get off the field on 3rd downs. and its not about running and ypc, but #of rushes per game to help control the clock.

minn had AP, who had a 2000 yard season. that didn't get them a championship. you need defense to win a championship

I don't get it and never will.

Some here are salivating on a RB that has yet to be reinstated after being convicted of reduced child abuse charges. We don't know when he will be allowed to play or if he might have a relapse. Meanwhile, far more bandwidth is spent on alleged cheating that unlikely changed a game while a child was definitely harmed. All the recent flaming on ethics and morality is nothing more than a selective tool by homers that actually could not care less about such things.

Patriots are outliers. They have Brady who can win with smurfs as WRs. Don't use them as a typical comparison.
AP never had a good QB playing with him. Just like Romo never had a good OL till this year. It takes more than an individual effort to win SB.
Now out our OL in front of AP, Romo with Dez and Witten....that'll bring nightmares to opposing teams. Even with that we still need major upgrades at pass rushing positions to win championship.

Houston didn't make the playoffs and they had JJ Watt.

I guess Watt like Adrian didn't help his team on their championship quest.

See what I did there?

The problem is that as-of right now, Peterson can't apply for reinstatement until April 15th. He does not count against the Vikings cap while suspended so they don't have an incentive to cut him prior to April 15th.

People can argue the Pros and Cons of going after Peterson vs signing Murray, but they have to decide on Murray in early March at the beginning of free agency.

If they don't re-sign Murray in March, they have to do it with a plan that does not include Peterson because there would be no guarantee that they can sign him. They can't talk to him while he is under contract with the Vikings.

I don't know Mark Dominick but I know that Herm Edwards is an idiot.

Doty is still deliberating isn't he?

this part did get me little giddy:

“Peterson is a tone-setter. You get him back there with that line, with a wide receiver in Dez Bryant, a quarterback in Tony Romo, and a tight end in Jason Witten? That’s a bad sight for the rest of the league.”

RB is a fungible position. Who cares if you miss out on a Ryan Matthews.

I would hope the team takes the chance at Suh or Hardy if they were available over even an AP, on top of choosing not to resign Murray. The team has weapons outside to accommodate a 1,200 yard rusher if that became the "worst" case scenario considering the talent on the OL. The D wouldn't need to be hidden as much either, meaning taking more shots on first downs with Dez and co.
