Ex NFL Coach & GM - Cowboys Easy Choice Is Adrian Peterson

Assuming Adrian Peterson is reinstated at the beggining of the league year, when does Adrian Peterson get first check?

I'm talking about saving 25-38m over the next 3 years. If they commit to him this year, then why cut him next year and after that if you are talking about the HoF then keep him for 2017. Right now they have an easy out that most teams never have with a player like Peterson. It's all speculation at this point, but they just paid him 12m for one game last year and are probably a little miffed about it.

Again, when would the actual savings occur? When do they have to write the first check to him?

Google Al Davis and Marcus Allen, stuff like this happens, and I'm not even suggesting anything as harsh as holding him for years, just exploring options til June 1st at the latest.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't the Al Davis - Marcus Allen thing happen pre salary cap?

so in other words, you realized that they don't owe him any money until well after june 1st?

I never said they were in a hurry to release him, you are arguing with someone else about the timing. I just feel MINN will cut him sometime after April 15th when the League rules on his status.

And I'm not so much arguing that he won't be cut, just the timing won't be what everyone wants.

Actually, they would be in the hook for his salary were he to get hurt. Unless you wanted to go the Steve McNair - Titans route?

Because if the example you provide occurred pre salary cap, it's an apples to oranges comparison to use it today.

not really, as i've already established, they don't need the cap room unless their signings will take them beyond $16 million in cap space.

There is little incentive for the Vikings to cut Peterson unless they do the honorable thing for a franchise player and let him walk into the sunset.

The reality though is they'll keep him and try to get some trade value for him.

No one is trading for that contract. 3yr/43m. He doesn't have to do anything but show up and you have to pay him.

They would not be on the hook for a non football related injury and I would fully expect them to not let him go to the team facility while all this takes place.

Houston didn't make the playoffs and they had JJ Watt.

I guess Watt like Adrian didn't help his team on their championship quest.

See what I did there?

yes I see. you took one player example. I said DEFENSE. I didn't mention one player. and thanks for making my point. you don't win with one player. we are not a RB away from superbowl. we are several defensive players away from a superbowl.

see what I did there :)

Patriots are outliers. They have Brady who can win with smurfs as WRs. Don't use them as a typical comparison.
AP never had a good QB playing with him. Just like Romo never had a good OL till this year. It takes more than an individual effort to win SB.
Now out our OL in front of AP, Romo with Dez and Witten....that'll bring nightmares to opposing teams. Even with that we still need major upgrades at pass rushing positions to win championship.

I agree that it takes more than an individual effort to win the game and that's the point. we had an 1800 yard rusher. at the end, our defense couldn't hold a hobbling QB and couldn't get off the field. seattle and dallas were 1-2 in rushing and seattle had the #1 defense and that's why they ended up in the superbowl.

everyone is just plugging in AP and assuming that he is going to get 2500 yards behind this offense and we become unstoppable. that means then we pass a little less and overall it might net out. so the offense being unstoppable is far from the case. Patriots had an all time offense that was unstoppable until it met a great defense. the point of this whole thread and how it started was do we spend our resources on another running back?

Do we go get AP or do we get a Hardy or Suh? now I am sure there are those who will say we can get both. but if there was one choice. AP or Suh? I take Suh. because he would take this defense to another level but AP would make the offense a little better.

Just because you trade for him doesn't mean you end up with the current contract.

That's exactly what it means.

If Peterson has no choice in where he is traded why would you assume he would re-negotiate. He has all the leverage at that point. If they don't want to pay him the 12.75m the only option is to cut him weeks after trading for him.

Yeah. Really.

One happened with no cap, the other with a cap.

Every penny spent us now accounted for.

Apples. Oranges.
