Because of the nature of the wide receiver position, there is a big difference between top tier money and the next level down.

Both Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald are making 16 million per year. Let's first make it clear, that is entirely too much for any wide receiver. The 3rd highest paid receiver is Mike Wallace at 12 million per year.

Dez Bryant doesn't want Mike Wallace money, he wants Megatron money. I think his production warrants more than Mike Wallace, however less than Calvin Johnson. I would say 13-13.5, and anything more than that I'd probably trade him instead. You have to remember every million you give Dez you're basically taking away from the defense.

Negotiations with Dez might go year long depending on where the sides agree. Dez might want to prove he is in the same category as Johnson and Fitzgerald, and in that case signing him this year won't happen. If you're Dez, you really can't be in any hurry to sign your deal.

I dont know, it may take awhile

But I think players are continually more willing to sign to secure the guaranteed money. The way this team gets injuries, that has to be a prominent risk in Dez and his agent's mind.

If he blows a knee this year, he isnt getting $10M per and will likley have to sign a 1 yr prove it deal

Those 1 year prove it deals don't really apply to guys like Dez, and not really at his age.

I'd rather not have to franchise him two years in a row, but we might be heading towards that.

It's all about the signing bonus and guaranteed money. The $ per year is for show.

Price of a WR is a lot. Guys like Bowe and Wallace aren't worth their contracts. I agree though 10-12 mill a year should do it. That's top 5 isn't? Better do it now, before Demaryius, AJ and Julio sign their contracts.

The only thing I recently heard is he wanted to be paid "top 5 money." I question "Megatron money" as well.

There is no such thing as top 5 money.

You have top 2 money and then you have everyone else.

Some unreasonable suggestions here. 10-12 won't get it done. These are the players who make between 10-12 mill a year. Mike Wallace makes 12 mill a year. Bowe is at 11.2. Vincent Jackson 11.1. Harvin 10.7. Brandon Marshall is at 10.0.

None of those receivers are in Dez's class. Perhaps he isn't in the class of Johnson or Fitzgerald. But he's clearly better than the 10-12 million guys.

If he wanted Mike Wallace money, he would have been signed already.

But how do you know what Dallas actually offered? IF anything at all...?I haven't seen any numbers thrown around or contracts talks being rejected.

I agree. Players do not like the franchise tag that was something the owners bargained for. Players want the longer term contracts it gives them the protection should an injury take place and as you mentioned they get the guaranteed money

I agree, it's probably a little low. And Marshall is definitely worth his contract.

I really like Dez. HOWEVER, no 8-8 team with as many holes as we have should pay a wide receiver that kind of money. Trade him for two first round picks and lets keep building the right way; there are other options at wide receiver and on offense.

I think dealing with Dez was going to be difficult regardless of what Smith got. Dez is just a difficult person, on and off the field.
