Players extend early for insurance. What if they get really sick or hurt? What if their position or stye of play lends itself to a lot of wear and tear and so a production drop is likely? What if they're juicing and want to cash in before they got caught? What if there is a team that is currently desperate and willing to overpay? Lots of potential reasons.

Actually the risk of injuries........LBer position has more injuries than any other position according to Stephen Jones.

While true he’s on pace to be the best pass rusher in the game. If he gets hurt he’s still getting paid. Jerry would still make him the highest paid linebacker.

I don’t disagree he will be highly paid. I just don’t see it being fully guaranteed as a defensive end or linebacker. Those guys get hurt more than quarterbacks…..

Maybe not guaranteed, but his position as shown on the depth chart is meaningless. He's the clear leader of this defense and maybe the best defensive player to come around in 30+ years. He'd be well worth every dime.

First off you cannot extend him until after next season.

Second of all he is not going to take that deal. He is almost certain to get 33-34 million per year (aka more than Donald) so why would he take 25? The cost of drafting great players is that they get paid. Now granted it will not affect the salary cap until 2026 but he is going to get paid.

The player rarely gives a discount for doing it early and there is still injury possibilities.
