Yes, the end result of blowing a lot of money in free agency is usually poor. Well documented.

That is not the issue at hand right now. Free agency, when used appropriately as a supplemental tool to ease pressing needs heading into a draft, can be effective.

Our approach has been highly questionable.

The one quality improvement in Thornton, he just happens to play the deepest position in the entire upcoming draft.

I agree but those rounds are crucial. Besides Anthony Hitchens, I can't think of many quality players outside of the first 3 rounds we have hit on as of late. I know a lot of teams can say the same but still it would be nice for a mid round pick to turn into a quality player.

We are probably the best in the league at udfas though.

What I think is crazy is that we would spend millions of dollars on a guy like Zack Martin when he becomes available but if Martin played for any other NFL team other than the Cowboys then Dallas wouldn't come near him.

A player the caliber of Zack Martin will never sniff free agency. Free Agency is usually made up of players with question marks due to average production or injuries or aging veterans, not all pro guards in their mid 20s.

Two anomalies on both sides. When you look at the 4 teams that spend the most there's 3 perennial losers and a team that usually happens to win a bunch of games (Colts) as reflected by their winning percentage. Then on the side with teams spending the most..3 teams that typically win a lot of games and a perennial loser (us). Nothing really to take from it except the good franchises win, and the bad ones dont.

There is a difference between spending huge amounts on free agents and using free agency to fill holes created by free agency and less than perfect drafting...

The patriots for example...trade Jones before becoming a free agent and immediately fill the void with Long. We have holes and we low ball possible replacements out of fiscal principles.
