With that incredibly politically incorrect statement, America's newest hero announced himself to the world.

With his wild hair and twanging drawl, Charles Ramsey is like a character from a gritty American TV show like The Wire. But today, he is being hailed as the saviour who helped bust three women out of a gruesome captivity after they had been missing for a decade, presumed dead.

Mr Ramsey's account of the moment Berry saw fresh air and begged him to call 911, captured in an interview with a local news station, is incredibly compelling and is rapidly going viral.

The interview unfolded amid a large crowd outside the house. Here's how it panned out.

Reporter: "Walk me through again what happened this afternoon. You heard screaming..."
Ramsey: "I heard screamin. I'm eatin my McDonald's, I come outside, I see this girl goin' nuts tryin' to get out of her house. So I go on the porch, I go on the porch and she says 'help me get out, I been in here a long time'. So you know, I figured this is a domestic violence dispute, so I opened the door, but we can't get in that way because how the door is, it's so much that a body can't fit through, only your hand. So we kicked the bottom and she comes out with a little girl, and she says 'call 911. My name is Amanda Berry'."

Reporter: "And did you know who that was when she said that?"
Ramsey: "When she told me it didn't register until I got the call to 911. And then, I'm calling to 911 for Amanda Berry? I thought this girl was dead, you know what I mean? And she got on the phone and she said 'yeah, this is me' and the detective Cook, Gregory Cook says 'Charles, you know who you rescued?' "

Crazy that he had been living beside of him for over a year & had no clue anyone else lived in the house. Sad for the girl thou I heard an interview with one of her relatives who said her mom passed a few years back and felt like she died of a broken heart.

Hard to see how 10 years could go by and they not have a chance to get away or call for help.

I don't even know who Amanda Berry is.
I don't think anyone does outside of the Cleveland area. But it's completely rare for anyone missing to be found alive after 10 years...and to be helped by a man such as Charles Ramsey.

Pretty crazy interview.

I'm not familiar with the names in this case, but I'm glad their nightmare is over.

Those three guys are fortunate that I am not in charge of handing out their punishment.

It would begin today, .. I can't say when it would end, but they would not enjoy it.

I also can not believe that these 3 girls are the only ones in our society being held against their will.

Somehow we need to make it known that if you take someone else's child, .. you are no longer needed in our society, .. and you will not enjoy our response.

This needs to be a well known public fact.

Agree 100%. Sick, sick world we live in when people can do evil things like this and have no remorse.

Not far from my home, 3 teenagers were recently ran over in a hit and run, costing a 16 year old his life. They are still looking for the suspect(s). Stories like this seem far to common these days.

Sad, sad world.

Yeah it's all over the news here in Cleveland obviously. I totally remember hearing about the two girls when they were kidnapped and I can't believe it's been 10 years!! So glad they were found alive :)

Couldn't agree more.

People are just getting more and more sick. I think part of the reason they are that way is because they just don't care because they know they are pretty much protected by the justice system as far as what can be done to them.

Sick people don't care about whether the justice system is strong or weak.

That is why you still have killers and perverts in states or other countries that have a strong punishment attitude. Whether it be putting someone to death or cutting off a hand or whatever punishment that is seen as very strict.

Sick people are Sick people.
Perverts are Perverts.
Killers are Killers.

If quick and severe punishment of child rapists causes ONE guy to rethink his choice, and not do it for fear of said quick and severe punishment, .. it worked.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a society that goes drastically overboard to protect their children.

You are right, there will always be crazies out there, but if we cause 1, 10, or 100 all over our country to rethink what they are planning to do to someone else's child, .. we are better for it.

I would be all for a death penalty for child rapists, but I think this might be more mental illness kind of a thing rather than an active choice, not saying this that for 100% of these guys. I am not a doctor, but I think it is more about preying on someone who has no control over the situation.
