Actullay, it's the second of the series and the 6th of the franchise. Nolan's BATMAN BEGINS and THE DARK KNIGHT have nothing to do with the first four "Burton/Schmacher" films. But I get what you are saying as it was the 6th "BATMAN" in 19 years.

If WB plays there cards right, hires talented directors and writers and lets them do their thing, Batman can be a Bond-like franchise for the studio.

You got it. Didn't mean to imply that this new incarnation has anything in common with the Schumacher movies, except for the Caped Crusader in name.

BTW, I was wrong last night - TDK is still $400k behind Batman '89, but I feel safe saying that it should pass it tonight.

That's only a little bit true. It got many folks -- the mainstream -- into theaters opening weekend. If the film sucked, it wouldn't have made the money it did. What has driven this film is the film itself -- it's damn good and that's what's being said about it via word of mouth. Plus, you've got folks seeing it multiple times and that's not just Batman fans -- another sign of a good film.

The bottom line here is that TDK is a hell of a movie that recieved great reviews by critics and is getting very positive word of mouth. To say that Heath's death is what has drove this film this summer is, with all to respect, nonsense.

I hear ya and I am not trying to overstate anything... especially when I said "partially" NOT "drove"

As is the case historically... when someone dies their stock goes up.

The real bottom line is: The movie is good.. maybe real good.... but it is not a great movie IMO. I certainly dont feel the need to see it twice. Everything mentioned that "may have been missed" I caught the first time without even really thinking about it.

If I see it again its only cause a few friends havent seen it yet.

Mind you... I am a BIG Superhero fan. I can get into the mostly action ones or the mostly serious story ones and this just didnt cut it for me. The last three have been disspointing. Ironman, TIH & TDK.

Hmm, interesting. If The Dark Knight also goes for an extended Halloween release (Halloween is on a Friday this year), promoting people to dress up and make it an event, I change my mind and say it definitely makes $550 M plus.

"Dark Knight" plans re-release for Oscar push
Thu Sep 11, 2008 2:46pm EDT
By Carl DiOrio

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Batman wants an Oscar. To be precise, Warner Bros. wants a statuette -- or 10 -- for "The Dark Knight". So the studio plans to re-release its blockbuster Batman sequel in January, the height of Academy Awards voting season.

"It's just a matter of bringing it back as a reminder for people," a studio insider explained.

Warner Bros. domestic distribution president Dan Fellman acknowledged ongoing talks with Imax execs over the prospect of restoring the Christian Bale starrer to some giant-screen venues in January. It's uncertain if "Dark Knight" also will reappear in conventional venues at that point.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film's huge commercial and critical success has spurred talk of possible Oscar nominations for its director, producers and cast -- most specifically Bale's co-star, Heath Ledger, for the late actor's edgy performance as the Joker.

To date, "Dark Knight" has rung up about $512 million domestically and $440 million internationally, including more than $55 million in Imax grosses. A pre-Oscars re-release would help assure its topping $1 billion worldwide.

But with the title set to hit DVD in December, it's now apparent anyone hoping the Batman sequel would soar to "Titanic" heights will be disappointed. "Dark Knight" already ranks as the second-highest-grossing movie ever, after "Titanic's" phenomenal $1.84 billion -- a mix of $600.8 million in domestic box office and $1.24 billion in foreign coin registered in 1997 and 1998.

You can't stop it. You can only hope to contain it. ;)

It's too damn popular. My only question is does it have the staying power to finally dethrone Titanic for all-time box office in a single year? I really wish one of the latest Star Wars movies had accomplished the trick, but I'll take any movie doing so at this stage.
keep in mind inflation

The new batman series is way better than the old one. No more ice skating clowns with hockey sticks. Bale is perfect for the role.
