I always thought that was Kevin Jones when we took Julius instead of Steven Jackson?

That was my first thought, too. Jones is the guy we supposedly liked best and I think they even tried to trade up to get him.

I never minded the Felix pick. He was a HR hitter that the team needed out of the backfield and on returns. Guys like him have made huge impacts for other teams, like Sproles and Hester. It is too bad he never found his long term spot on the team and maybe those weeks of being the lead back took too much out of him. I wouldn't call him a bust, but he was a disappointment.

Kevin Jones went 30th to Detroit in 2004 and the Cowboys took Julius at #43. Neither back panned out.

He said Kevin Smith instead of Felix? Kevin Smith was available he went in the 3rd round. Maybe Smith is who Broaddus wanted which could explain why he's no longer a scout.

Stasheroo's post made me realize I mixed Jones up with Jones. I do know the discussion was of one back over another.

I honestly, think we got caught napping on that one. Everyone had Mendenhall going first - I think we expected to be arguing between Stewart and Jones.

The Cowboys may not have ended up with Demarcus Ware the following year had they not made the trade and taken Jackson. Granted Jackson has been a very good back but he's missed a number of games with injuries and never turned the Rams into a good team. They only made the playoffs once with Jackson and that was during his rookie year.

I just don't think Felix cared much about playing in the NFL. He's like Alex Barron in that respect... Liked getting paid, didn't like the rest of it.

Jerry convinced himself that Barber could do as a starting RB what he was doing as a fresh legged situational back so he wanted someone to compliment him. I do remember Stewart being mentioned but Jerry didn't want an every down back and like a fool burned a first round pick on a complimentary player. He used the 22nd pick on a back who would get only 146 attempts in 2 years.

The Cowboys waited until Felix was fat, slow and lost his desire before starting him.

I was unhappy with the pick from day one, but I was hoping for Mendenhall. That shows ya how much I know right there. ;)

Both Jones and Jenkins were taken roughly where they were rated in the draft. Hindsight drafting is always perfect though.

As I recall, during the draft the Titans called up the Cowboys to mildy complain that we'd gotten their pick with Jones.

This is true -- we didn't reach on these guys. And we did get some good play out of them. Our one playoff "run" featured two awesome performances by Felix against the Eagles. When Garrett took over the next year, he made Jones the primary back and he was solid - particularly as a receiver. Jenkins, of course, had at least one very good season.

Not what you hope for from a first rounder but certainly not busts to the level of a Bobby Carpenter or Shante Carver

I just think that although the Cowboys got some good play from both guys, they just don't fit the kind of team that is getting assembled, which is a good thing.

Ouch. I was on board with the pick when they made it. Of course, I really thought Julius Jones was going to be a star too. LOL.

I wanted Rice to start with, then Tashard Choice was a backup pick if we didn't get Rice. Both showed some ability to run between the tackles with vision that I didn't see from others who would be available to us.

I didn't think Felix was a bad pick. He had quickness, acceleration and cutting ability, and health had not been a problem in college. The only real concern I had with him was vision because the way Arkansas used him primarily was letting him beat the defense around the corner, a lot of the time with Darren McFadden running the Wildcat.

The injuries were the biggest surprise with him, and IMO they took their toll on his strengths as a runner.
