Why couldn't Van Noy play lb in our scheme? You said yourself that he is pretty good in coverage and sets the edge well against the run. I think he'd make a very good solb. If he was available in the 2nd, which he won't be, I'd pull the trigger in a heartbeat.

I agree! I like the player. But it seems they value measurables too much on this team, meaning height. Got a feeling they are looking for a 6'5 player at end. He rushes standing up for the most part. His most comfortable fit is a stand up linebacker in a 3-4. But I agree, if the player is there, take him in the 2nd. He is that good!

Will Sutton (Arizona State) Scouting Report

Positives
: Excellent hand use and plays with excellent leverage. Very quick first step when timed right. Very stout and good anchor. Nice job of splitting double teams. Excellent swim move. Position versatility. Gets double teamed almost every play. Nice job reading out screens. Does a nice job of getting in QB's vision and disrupting passes.

Negatives: On the ground a lot! Difficulty shedding blocks at times. Not as much a factor in the run game as you would like for a guy his size playing in the middle. Does not have good length. Not overly athletic. No catch up speed to track down QB or RB's in pursuit.

How he could fit on this team
: Can probably be the 1 or the 3 tech depending on his playing weight.

Overall feeling: Like him. Plays with a chip on his shoulder. Watched film from 2012 as well since he played at 290ish rather then the 305 he played at this year. He looked lot more explosive in 2012 at the lesser weight. I would rather see him at that for the Cowboys.

Justin Ellis (LA Tech) Scouting Report

Positives
: Big, powerful man! He is like a man amongst boys out there. Completely dominant in the run game. His power is impressive in pass rushing as well. Saw him multiple times bull rush the center and the guard at the same time into the QB.

Negatives: Obviously his size hurts him in this scheme. Probably not going to give you much in the pass rush department.

How he could fit on this team
: Doubt team goes this direction, I think they are really looking for 2 explosive pass rushers in the middle. But if there was a fit, it would be at 1 tech. More of a 3-4 nose tackle.

Overall feeling: This guy reminds me of a younger Vince Wilfork. Explosive and powerful for a man his size! I really really like the player, but I doubt the team will.

Aaron Donald (Pittsburgh) Scouting Report

Positives
: Really explosive player, shoots the gap like a rocket. Has a really nice combination of speed and power. Really smooth pass rusher. Good job of splitting double teams. Excellent strength. People do not escape his tackles. Good arm length. Good motor.

Negatives: Doesn't have ideal height. Gets fooled a lot on option plays.

How he could fit on this team
: Reminds me of Jason Hatcher without the height. I kept thinking it was Hatcher watching him. Very similar skill set. Definitely be a 3 tech in this scheme.

Overall feeling: Love this player! I think he would be an excellent fit on this team. Can be a day one starter at the 3 tech. Hope his stock doesn't rise TOO much.

Ra'Shede Hageman (Minnesota) Scouting Report

Positives
: Excellent excellent size! Explosive for a man his size. Very powerful. Uses his length well in disturbing passes. Position flex. Takes on a lot of double teams. Very high ceiling. Uses his raw skill well in the run game.

Negatives: Very raw pass rusher. Needs to develop more of a skill set. The only rush he has is his bull rush. Needs to learn how to use leverage more. Does not make enough plays for my liking. Has a hard time getting off blocks, needs to learn how to use his hands more effectively. Plays too upright.

How he could fit on this team
: I would use him as a 1 tech in this scheme.

Overall feeling: Like him as a 1 tech. He has the measurables, but is the most raw of the DT's I have reviewed. Has a huge ceiling but needs to be refined in his pass rush ability. Has bust potential as well. If he got drafted by the Cowboys, Marinelli could develop him greatly. Be a really nice scenario for him, and I think he could reach his ceiling and be a dominant player. Reminds me of Brockers a little. Lengthy player with great size, but very raw. Excellent against the raw, but pass rush ability needs to be refined.

Just to clarify....you are saying Hageman is a 1 tech now because he needs coaching and to refine his game, but he has the potential to be a dominate 3 tech in the future?

Timmy Jernigan (Florida State) Scouting Report

Positives
: Good at clogging up the middle against the run. Good use of hands. Nice job of setting the edge with running QBs and running backs.

Negatives: Don't see a great motor, see very little effort at times. Does not have great explosion. Has a real difficulty getting off blocks. To me, he is a "flash" player. Will make one or two nice plays a game, but I don't see any consistency. Gets very little movement in the pocket. Do not see a real good athlete. Looks like he is lost at times.

How he could fit on this team
: 3 Tech

Overall feeling: Not a fan at all! By far my least favorite DT. I don't see the makings of a good pass rusher. I don't like my 3 tech not to be a great athlete. Sorry hes just not for me! Have hard time finding positives for the player.

No I am saying with his size and abilities his best fit is a 1 tech, and has the potential to dominate as a 1 tech. If he improves his pass rush ability, he will be able to be a solid 3 down player. Even if his pass rushing abilities improve, I still would rather him be a 1 tech. Nothing wrong with having a 1 tech that can rush the passer :)

Idk, I see the burst and athleticism of a good 3 tech already. Yeah he needs to be coached up and learn a few pass rush moves, but those things are expected in a rookie. Not saying he's a sure thing because he is indeed raw, but I see a guy with the ceiling of a 8 sack a year DT.

I don't get your point. Why can't he do that at the one tech? It's not against the rules to have two defensive tackles who can rush. Pair him up with a smaller quicker 3 tech

Dan- you are The Man.
I wish I could give this entire thread a thousand likes.

You got me salivating over the draft months earlier than I usually do.
This reminds me of that great poster Couchscout.

I miss his threads. Those were always amazing reads- including the posters who sparred with him.
Like this thread.
Glad it's stickied and it's the first thread I've ever put on Watch.

Great show Dan! You are providing knowledge and entertainment to more than you know.

My bad, I wasn't trying to attack you or anything. I was just trying to differentiate whether or not you thought he could be an effective pass rusher or not. Maybe I'm just a little slow lol

To be clear- I didn't like you're post for calling yourself slow.
You definitely aren't and I appreciate the self-deprecation and humility.

I think those are admirable traits, honestly.

Nah I totally understand what your saying. I believe he can be an effective pass rusher if he develops more pass rush moves. He certainly has the athletic ability to develop more so in that area of his game. The purpose of the Cowboys scheme is they like all 4 of their defensive lineman on the field to be able to rush the passer. The only reason I am saying he should be a 1 tech is because he has the size for it. I am not saying he does not have the pass rush ability of a 3 tech. But if he has the size to be a 1 tech, why not? If he can effectively take on double teams, and still be able to rush the passer, the Cowboys defensive line will be that much better for it!

Anyone have any other DTs I should look at? Some of the bigger ones I am going to avoid since we obviously aren't going to go that route with this team. So that includes guys like Louis Nix and McCullers.

I am going to watch DaQuan Jones tonight, and maybe get to another linebacker or two. The linebackers that I want to check out are Mosley, Attaochu and Smallwood. Any other linebackers worth checking out?

I am trying to get the top rated guys of every position out of the way first, and after I finish doing all the positions, then I will go back and look at other guys I didn't get a chance to cover.
