Finding Romo's Replacement

Jeez, talk about your straw man..

Who here has EVER advocated drafting a QB "just because" ? I would think anyone that wants the Cowboys to draft a QB wants them to only do so if the team believes he can be a future franchise player.

Many people have suggested that we should draft a qb in the first round next year. They haven't named anyone in particular, so that sounds to me like they just want us to get a 1st round qb just because....

I don't know why you guys are arguing anyhow. We are going to sign Andrew Luck as a UFA in 2017. All this arguing is for not. :)

I think this is exactly right. You keep your options open, but you don't get fixated on drafting just anyone in the first round. So many busts in the 1st round, but these people want us to just drop 1st round draft pick after 1st round draft pick trying to get a replacement.

My whole point is don't force it. Opportunities to develop a guy or sign a free agent come along over time, but if you do see the QB you want and Romo is near retirement, pull the trigger. I also like the idea of stacking up first round draft picks, to try and trade up for a guy who they think is special, or going after a franchised QB.

I think Romo is near enough to retirement, right now, that it is wise for the Cowboys to take QB if they feel like he's a worthy prospect. Romo is withing 5 seasons of retirement and probably more like 3. I would have no problem with the Cowboys making a move to get a QB at any point from here on out. JMO

I don't see Romo retiring in 3 years, and I would want nearly every year of a rookie's contract when Romo is replaced. Only way you can really keep the cap price down.

No. You could take a kid next year at any point in the draft and develop him. He could sit for two years and you would still have a pretty good idea of what you have. I don't think you are limited to what you can do to develop a QB, based on Romo. Romo, IMO, is not long for the NFL. I don't see 5 years but if he can do 5, that's great.

Brady, Romo and Warner are such one offs that trying to extrapolate anything from their cases is stupid. They were the equivalents of winning the lottery- nothing more.

Bottom line is that you get your franchize QB in todays NFL in the first rd or at the very least the second round, early. That is the only way that has any kind of decent odds.

I agree that they are low likelihood, but there is some likelihood. I would also throw in Jake Delhomme in there as well. Another small school guy that slipped thru the cracks.

I think the bigger one off is Russell Wilson.

Wow, this thread s like..........:banghead: Excuse me for interrupting, I'll find my way out.

Wow, a lot of named calling (direct or indirect) by you in this thread.

According to you nobody can read or debate and all responses you don't like are Strawman arguments.

If you think somebody does not understand your point, you can't conceive that maybe you're not doing a very good job of making the point in the 1st place.

Gosh darnit, I am forced to give you a "like" for this. I usually save those for Risen and Alexander.

I like Cook. If the Cowboys liked him well enough, I could see us packaging picks next year to try and move up to get him. He is a guy who I think would need some time on the bench before he could come in and be ready but he fits our offense and he has all the tools IMO.

Seconded. I think he'd be a great candidate to be groomed for 2 years before taking the reigns.

I'd rather have Adrian Peterson carrying the ball for us 25 times a game for the next three seasons than having Tony Romo's replacement sitting on the bench for 60 minutes a game for the next three seasons.

Wish I could like that twice.

I disagree with those of you who think it's safe to either wait for a QB when Romo can't go anymore and those who think we can find one in the later rounds. Romo is the exception to the rule. It's a rarity to find a QB who becomes an effective franchise QB in the later rounds never mind an undrafted free agent.

I think it's critical that we address QB in the 1st or 2nd round in the 16 draft, 17 at the very latest. Too much has been invested in this team over the past 4 years for us to hand it over to a guy who's mediocre.

If you want a perennial playoff team you better have a star quarterback. The time is now for us to ensure that this happens.

Oh, I get it now. Having a quality QB on the bench learning his craft will prevent the team from signing any other players and keep the team from reaching the Super Bowl. It would hurt the team too much to be prepared if Romo gets hurt or retires. Those post-Aikman years didn't teach some fans anything. I want the least amount of drop off from Romo as possible and maybe some improvement instead of digging through trash dumpsters for jags to fill the QB position. I want the answer in place to be a long term contender and a well-run organization year after year. The Cowboys are not just Tony Romo and there will be Super Bowls to be won long after he is gone. I want to see the the moves that will insure that Dallas is a top team for years to come. Short sighted thinking is not going yo do that.

Do we want to go through another QB wasteland? Grab a QB, let him sit and hope he turns out. It'll be better than waiting until Romo gets injured and having to hand the keys over to a rookie.

Taysom Hill is the guy that I like who would likely be somebody you didn't have to spend a 1st round pick on. He could return to form this year and then that's out the window because before he was injured, he was being discussed as a Heisman Candidate.

That's a good looking pup in your avi Kev.

Next year's draft makes a lot of sense to grab Romo's successor.

One, it appears to be a decent year for draft eligible quarterbacks.

Two, whether it was injury or retirement or whatever reason, the earliest we could part ways with Romo's contract is June 1st before the 2017 season. Ideally, I see Romo playing at a high level two maybe three years. So, you draft your guy in 2016, he sits a year behind Romo, maybe two. In 2017 or 2018, he comes in behind a ridiculously talented offensive line, knowing the system, and is hopefully ready to go. If it's 2017, he still has three years under his rookie contract so he's extremely affordable, allowing you to spend those resources on defense.
