Stephen Jones always says, the Cowboys like to fill all needs via fa so they organization can draft the best player available. As we all know, since he has taken charge, minimum short-term placeholders are signed then the team drafts best player at a need position.
What positions are still needed to fill?
1) RDE-team lost Robert Quinn, Ty Crawford is coming back from injury on both his hips and Randy Gregory still is on indefinite suspension. Sure. some prospects are still on the roster, but nobody can be counted on. Griffen, Vernon, Golden are some of the names of interest out there. Clowney will not be an option.
2) Slot #3 WR-surprisingly the team lost Randall Cobb, very few thought he would double his salary on the open market. You would think the team would like to add a veteran to protect themselves. Gabriel, Richardson, Amedola could all be had for a 1 yr deal.
3) Strong Safety-both the team's projected starters are more coverage safeties then they are strong tackling in the box types. Wilson is the only true strong safety they have on their roster, depth and competition is needed. Jefferson, R. Jones, Burnett all fill the bill as low level signees at the position.
1) RDE
2) CB
3) DT
4) WR
5) S
Between CB and RDE, i really feel out first two draft picks are gonna be directed there. pass rushers and coverage CBs are still very much in demand and
difficult to hit home with, as other teams swoop them up with da quickness.
- i dunno what 3 tech will be high on the Cowboys value board and what round do they value them at, but should they feel that high about them, i can't
get mad about that either. We do need heir apparent as McCoy and Poe are more stop gap answers and we just dunno what we have in Hill who still has
to learn the game.
- BTW, I'm actually on board with the Cowboys draft philosophy with DTs and safeties, i'd only be interested in a DT if he presents legit pass rash traits ,,
and only draft a safety in first round if we believe he grades out as a blue chipper. (ala Gerwin James)
- With Cobb's departure and no vet immediate replacement brought in, that 3rd WR role is gonna be more prominent to acquire in the draft than ever,
Maybe there will be a late round trade for a vet the closer we get to the draft, but if not we'll likely have to at least address it between 3rd or 4th rd pick.
for a really good one - and hopefully he's a returner as well. Frankly with our dire defensive needs, i'd really prefer not to spend a 3rd-4th rounder on
a slot guy, but it appears Cowboys prefer a early draft pick over trying to get a Taylor Gabriel, etc.
- We tend to continue to ignore or have only such minimal interest in investing in the safety position...imo.
The highest it has been is with the Earl Thomas flirtation with a failed trade with Seattle and mysteriously we don't even try to pursue him
in FA when it wouldn't cost any high picks at all.
As soon as FA period happens, we tend to get into this Money Ball approach, and Stephen wanna pretend he's Brad Pitt (Billy Beane)
Could it have been different last year with supposedly Juan Thornhill on the books to choose between he and Trysten Hill.
Expect Cowboys to continue to have minimal regards in this year's draft as well and go with holdovers Xavier and stopgap Ha Ha Dix.
