I never, repeat, NEVER, allow thigs to get that bad. I define low as "just cracked that bottle, gotta get a backup".

Don't know if you're a G&T man but Hendricks and Fever Tree Elderflower Tonic is a game changer. Don't like that for Martinis because it's too heavy on the botanicals but perfect for a G&T.
Hendricks is wonderful. I also like Bombay for G & T.

Does to me and the Diet ones by Schweppes and Canada Dry ruin it for me. My favorite is Elderflower but the Naturally Light Fever Tree is good and lower in carbs and sugar. One thing I learned about any drink that involves lime is to squeeze the juice in but don't drop the rind in because it can really increase the bitterness.

G&T's are an acquired taste and a lot of people can't stand them. I started in the early 70's because of my early influences from my uncle and cousin and the coolest thing about G&T's back then was in a club with black lights, it glows. I'd pretend I was the Toxic Avenger loose in a nightclub. Rum and tonic is pretty swell too but I don't get the vodka tonic because that adds no balance to the tonic.

I just recently read how the G&T was created and it was the reverse of what I would have guessed. British sailors had to drink quinine water to help with malaria and to prevent scurvy and citrus was also a deterrent and they carried limes on board. You can imagine what warm quinine tasted like hundreds of years ago so they added gin to the quinine to take their "medicine" and limes to cut the bitterness. I salute the Unknown British Sailor every time I have one. I also say things like "blimey", "bollocks" and "bloody hell" while quaffing G&T's. I used to have a pith helmet that I donned when having them on the patio but my wife threw it away, said I looked like an idiot.. It was the hat or me and I wasn't as attached to the hat as I was to me.

As a young man, I lost my enthusiasm for G&T’s, as the local bartenders INSISTED on using Banker’s Club! In recent years, as I’ve gained perspective and a larger bank account, I’ve rejoined The Club of Discriminating Tastes. Of course, any gains I may have made in sophistication have been negated by my low brow, absurdist humor, affinity for porn and creative flatulence, but I digress.

Red Stag or Yukon Jack straight on the rocks. Those are my go to. I'm sort of over everything else.

I am trying to get over everything else but I need time. Give me 10 or 12 years and I can eliminate something, I'm sure.
We have faith in you Coach and know one day you'll eliminate putting ice in your drinks. I recently saw a tip for putting frozen mangos in sangria to cool it down without ice watering it down. I figured you already know that trick, but the others may not.

Would ice count?

I've used that frozen mango trick as well as watermelon in Margarita's and count that as two food groups. My favorite for a really nice pick me up late in the afternoon is freezing cold brew coffee into cubes and make a cocktail out of a shot of Kahlua, Bailey's and add cold brew cubes and cold brew. Great with a Maduro cigar, a fine sipping libation.

The other thing I used to do was put peaches in a blender and freeze that into medium sized cubes and drop that in the bottom of a champagne flute and fill with champagne. My wife and her girlfriends thought I was Mr. Special because I don't drink them and made them just for them. They didn't know that was just a diversion to keep them out of my hooch.
