Roy, that's a lot of assuming that you know what is going to happen in the future!!
With a healthy team, a great running game, , some lucky breaks here and there, I think we could make a run this year.....like what we did in 2014. They went Defense last year pretty heavy.
We aren't ready for life after Romo right now. They took a flyer on Dak. Who knows? We do need that QB though....... They are pushing it, for sure....but really...there isn't much out there.....

I should have clarified that I still consider Day 1 picks to be the first 3 rounds. Those are the rounds where we should be looking for starters, IMO.
By the way Irvin88, if the draft were one round, we'd be perennial SB contenders. Unfortunately for you and the team, it's not.

Lee, Dlaw, Crawford, Gregory are all 2nd and 3rd round picks. .....they are also starters

Since 2010, Lee is the only second round pick that's starting the season. Think about that for a moment.

If no one gets hurt and we get lucky? Ok, sure. But how often does that happen? And even then, we simply dont have the defense to win a championship.
After 2014 the FO saw the obvious. They needed to get a better defense and specifically the pass rush in order to truly compete for a championship. After watching a one legged GB QB get all the time in the world and end our season. What have they done in two years to solve that problem? We took a big step back last year because the morons thought that they could win a championship with McFadden and Randle as our backs. So they finally saw the error of their ways, but went way overboard fixing that issues with the #4 pick. So now we are back to 2014 with a great run game, but an even worse pass rush. Im just not seeing it. Too many dumb mistakes by the FO year after year. They can never get over the hump.
They are good enough to take care of one side of the ball at a time. Cant seem to handle both at the same time. And god help us when we have to actually find another franchise QB and groom him. How many years and how many dumb Quincy Carter like mistakes will that take? We had a shot this year to do something about it and they let it slip by. Could have had any of the top 3 QB's for a price.

I cant really argue with any of that. I feel the same way about it all...... But I just think you "take that chance" this year considering Romos window and EEs talent and the fact that the QB draft class wasnt all that great....and has some real questions with all of them.
If Romo goes down and we havent used some resources to address the position, were going to be in "Quincy Carter" hell....and you will be exactly right about all of it. Then were going to pay dearly for a "could be" franchise QB, like a Scott Mitchell or Jay Cutler.....Jeff George....something like that. I would rather grow one...
Having said all that. Were a deflated fan-base. A deflated team/organization/franchise....... were just beat down. Now, We have a QB, a good one. We have what good be a Great OL, we got an easier schedule, playing in the NFC East to boot, get Romo, Dez and key players staying healthy, gain some momentum , get some wins, early out of the gate..................And then add in the excitement of a rookie RB tearing up the league? Running Scoring on his way to rookie of the year.....and find ourselves with a home playoff game and maybe an NFCCG appearance...... I think you take that chance.
Stephen is changing the culture, and for the good. But I think you take the chance. Especially if you weren't sold on the QBs.....
just wanted to add: It goes against everything they were saying about the position for the last few years. There is no way around it. They are admitting they have been wrong about it.

Don't change your argument. That's not what you originally said. You said that Lee was the only 2nd rounder we had that is going to be a starter this season.

Really? Which one of his seasons did you think were impressive? The one with 143 yards, 105 yards or 54 yards?

If you don't understand the difference between "Lee is the only second round pick that's starting the season" and "Lee was the only 2nd rounder we had that is going to be a starter this season," then I can't help you. The only reason the argument "changed" is because you changed my quote to fit your argument.

What point are you even trying to make by saying this statement? We have other 2nd round picks on the team who will happen to miss the 1st game through a combo of suspension/injury. And since we used our 2nd rounder to trade up for Claiborne a person could technically include Claiborne in this and he will be starting the "1st game" whatever that is supposed to mean

It means our second round picks are not helping this team. In other words, the picks that should be premier picks have not panned out. Couple that with the fact that, overall, we draft pretty poorly after the 3rd round and it's no wonder why our D is in bad shape.

You can't say that two of the 5 second round picks since 2010 are missing the first 4 games so they are a bust. That isn't adequately describing the team's ability to find talent in the second round.
Lawrence will start once he's back. He's a starter, and he is a really good player. Even if his suspension is upheld, that is in no shape or form a busted pick. That was a really good pick.
Gregory will likely start once he's back. He is a starter. Or at worst an important situational edge rusher, which is valuable. If he busts, it won't be because of his talent, which is abundant. You can say they blew the pick if he continues to get suspended but at pick 60 he is worth the chance. He will be missed the first 4 games. A lot. If he wasn't a good player that wouldn't be the case.
Escobar hasn't had many chances but if the team wasn't going to let him take snaps away from Witten, then they shouldn't have used a second round pick on him. Not a good pick, I agree.
Bruce Carter started for a while, but IMO he was never that good. I have no issue calling him pretty much a miss. Didn't like him when we drafted him and don't like him as a player now.
So, since 2010 (when the drafting in Dallas started to change and improve) they have taken 5 second round picks. Of those 5, two (Escobar and Carter) were what I consider to be misses. The other 3 (Lee, Lawrence and Gregory) are all important defensive pieces.
60% isn't so bad, particularly when they've hit homeruns on all but one of their first round picks.
Now, if Gregory can't get himself straight, then talent or no, he will be considered a bust. At this point though, he is the most talented edge rusher on the team... and I wouldn't consider that a miss.

He hasn't had a chance to do much. Not his fault. Doesn't make him a disappointment. Perhaps your expecptations were to high.

I had very little expectations when the pick was made. I hated the pick in the second round because I knew he wouldn't beat out Wtten and he wasn't a great blocker for a two TE set. It was a wasted pick. Plain and simple.
And while you feel my expectations were too high, yours are way too low. If you don't feel 302 receiving yards in three years for a second round pick is not disappointing, then your standards are way too low.
