Coach "Bones" Fassel is a very good Special Teams coach. Everyone throughout the NFL knows that. He simply messed up by putting all of his eggs in the Greg Zuerlein basket, especially this preseason while Zuerlein had been injured, and refused to allow some other kicker the chance to prove himself. Now, it clearly contributed to the Cowboys Week 1 loss at the Buccaneers which the Cowboys would have won if they had a healthy and capable kicker (which Zuerlein is not at this moment).

It's good to see K Lirim Hajrullahu got added to the practice squad this week. I hope Jerry pushes Fassel to let Hajrullahu kick all week and add him to the 53 (while moving Zuerlein to temporary IR) so Hajrullahu can actually kick for us these next few games. I believe Hajrullahu will perform very well and open some eyes around here.

What's there to say in response to that? Bones and Greg aren't going anywhere, at least not before Week 2. Either the work that should have happened to prepare for the season happens this week to prepare for the Chargers or if more missed FGs occur, Jerry could take action. IMO, the Joneses are disappointed. What happens in response to that expressed disappointment will be interesting to see. I think Greg Z is still a good kicker but, we'll see. Bones' job may be on the line this week.

Bones is protecting his boy, Zuerlein.

Jerry needs to put his foot down. Allow Hajrullahu to compete. If Hajrullahu wins, put Zuerlein on IR and ride the next few weeks with Hajrullahu. If Hajrullahu performs very well, time to cut Zuerlein. If Bones doesn't like, start looking for his replacement.

Alright our kicker got the yips. It happens. Doesn't mean he won't get past it. Let's see what happens this week. Last year he was awesome.

The staff allowing an injured kicker to kick isn't on the kicker.

Sorry.
Is he still injured? Or did he just get the yips? Greg Z's post-game interview indicates he's fully healthy and took the blame for not doing his job.

Just ordinary cowboys disfunction. Always 2 steps behind, never a step ahead of a problem.
Well Zuerlein had back surgery and is just getting back to form. He is usually a reliable and a clutch kicker. Apparently they just signed Lirim to the practice squad a quality kicker from the CFL.
No forum member in here forecasted a strong possibility that Zuerlein's kicking miscues were going to manifest themselves in the BUCS game before it started. Maybe he was kicking ok in practices.
Hindsight enables us to look like brilliant trouble shooters and solution prodigies.

That won’t happen . Zuerlein will be booming kickoffs to the 5 so the Charger can lick his lips going for 30 or more .

Too late?
I know you watched the one game we played.

How'd the kicker do?

All fine, because kickers miss from time to time. I never blamed Z for a second.

Then I find out he was hurt and that may have affected his performance.

How does the staff not know this in advance?

Not only that they refused to have a second kicker in camp and were having Nusswander kick who was never a real option.

Crappy plan B and general lack of awareness by the staff which I was hoping we may be past around here. It's irritating to realize otherwise yet again.

Now.....did Z swear he was fine then use the injury as an excuse after the fact? Maybe....but the benefit of the doubt doesn't go in favor of the staff in my mind.

Meanwhile, having another kicker around is a mental distraction, but not during camp. There should have been a second kicker here all along. Not added now.

Maybe there's more to it, maybe it's same old.

Remains to be seen, but I neither wish to be right nor want to argue over it.
