Buckner's best spot will likely be inside in the 4-3.

I think he could play 4-3 end in the base and move inside in the nickel, but I also think some of the things that have been written about Dallas loving Bosa are probably true.

I just think if Clayborn is our main DE signing, that our intent will be to draft a DE at No. 4 whether Bosa is there or not. Now, maybe Dallas would trade down and go after a more traditional pass rusher like Ogbah.

He's the McKenzie Bernadeau of DLs. He's not a guy you jump up and down about, either out of happiness or out of anger. He's a dude you sign inexpensively so that you're covered as much as possible in the draft and can just follow your board to add good players.

If he could be the Jeremy Mincey of 2014 we would be doing all right.

FA isn't just about signing stars; it's about signing rotation guys too.
If at the right price, Clayborn can be a very good signing, bringing depth and youth.

We have to sign some marginal guys because let's say Bosa is drafted ahead of us or we go with Ramsey or we can't find a partner to trade down. Maybe our next pass rusher is gone before we're on the clock again. If we're going to draft BPA, then we have to sign guys who can play in the rotation even if they aren't going to generate double digit sacks.

Guess what? We also have to sign a CB in free agency, be it Claybourne or Carr or someone else. We have to have a CB so that we don't have to reach for one in the draft. That's what FA is all about.

It's really amazing how people are surprised that the natives are restless here.

This organization has been a textbook example of futility since the SB run era of the 90s.

But fans are supposed to just sit there and smile every single offseason? Great job, Jerry!

I guess our joy is having a luxurious Stadium and Team facility take that New England smh as I open this bottle of Xanax lol

Bro if we where coming off a NFC title game or SuperBowl or even a playoff victory no one could say boo about any moves but when your coming off a 4-12 season and only have 1 playoff in the Las 6 seasons your going to be a tad pissed

My point is we haven't made any moves yet. Free agency hasn't even begun. We haven't drafted.

People are literally pre-complaining.

Which is quite humorous.

And also quite sad.

I wonder if following the Cowboys adds any utility to people like you complaining just to complain.

That's what I'm thinking. If that the way we're looking at it, it looks a lot better.

This is what we do in FA now. We plug holes with vets who represent a value, and try to build through the draft. By and large, it's been a good strategy, because we've drafted well recently. Though the Gregory pick was a big risk that shows early signs of having been a mistake.

I'm ok with us building a rotation of 8 guys we can live with by adding guys like Clayborn if they're there to be added. I'd like to see us keep Crawford for that reason, too. But there's no doubt we need to improve that rotation, too.

As long as that is all this is, a mid-range, rotational guy. If it affects what they do otherwise, it turns into a negative.

And to think free agency hasn't even started yet.

If you want to feel that way.

I see other teams holding visits and being connected with more accomplished players, while we're plumbing the depths of the team with the lowest sacks in the entire league last year.

If you want to feel that inspires confidence, you have at it.

Either way, they need to build out a rotation. And I really think the plan is to do that with waves of young players rather than with one big name signing.

I think we'd like to bolster the line with Clayborn, and then add at least a 2nd round DT in the draft. There's a chance Hardy comes back if he doesn't get a big long-term offer in FA (and I think it's a toss up whether a team will take that sort of chance on him or not). If Hardy's back, though, it's going to be like McClain's deal last year, only for more money. Meaning we let him test the market and then settle on a number we're comfortable with.

That frees us the #4 spot to go QB, DB, LB, or Bosa/Buckner. Since I like the DEs least of any of those options, I think I'd be ok with rolling the dice here as long as we have at least 8 guys we fairly comfortable with on the DL. But then I like Lawrence and Crawford, Crawford and maybe even Irving better than most do. With Gregory and a quality 2nd round DT, that's 6 of the 8 I'd like to see.

One could argue we've drafted well only in the 1st round. We've hit on a few Hitchens, etc but not that many. Actually our greatest strength is finding players that go undrafted IMO.

I'm fine if it's strictly a Clayborn for Mincey exchange. I actually think that could be an upgrade. While Clayborn won't be a big sack contributor, he could be a nice rotational player and could probably play more quality snaps at strong side defensive end than you would expect from Mincey at this point. I'd be fine with that.

If Hardy's back, it frees things up a great deal. I like Kevin Dodd in round 2 much more than any thoughts of Bosa or Buckner in round 1. And I think the DT's are so strong this year that we could get several in rounds 3, 4, and 5.

Yeah, based on the 3 sacks he got in Atlanta last year. What a 'career revitalization'!

This 4-3 defensive shift has taken us right back to where so many of us feared. A team with no pass rush, scrambling for answers. Just like the good old days.

Demarcus Lawrence can play the role of 'end of days' Charles Haley, whose career was ended because of back issues, only Lawrence can do it much sooner.

Randy Gregory can play Shante Carver, a bust draft pick who never accomplished anything.

Clayborn can be Marcellus Wiley all over again and bring those same 3 sacks.

And we can waste the #4 overall pick on Joey Bosa to handle the Greg Hardy role and get us 7-8 sacks a year and never be worth the draft pick invested in him.

Sorry, for being a downer, but the thought of this glacier being any sort of answer, especially if they let Hardy go, is beyond depressing...

:(

Good stuff. Can you apply the same biting criticism to the Giants', Eagles', and Skins' DL? How does our DL stand to theirs? The Eagles have Fletcher Cox and ? The Giants have JPP and ? The Skins have Kerrigan and ?

Would a comparison to other teams improve this team's situation or would it make you feel better in some sort of 'at least we're not Cleveland' kind of way?
