Fisher - Are Cowboys Too Optimistic On Dez Surgery?

I don't know what to make of all the articles related to type of surgery Dez had yesterday. It's frustrating that there is such a wide range of recovery times / initial success rate.

I am so medically naive that my natural assumption is that a bone related surgery like this has a cut and dried recovered period (4-6 weeks).

Are Cowboys Too Optimistic On Dez Surgery?

Fish consults medical experts about injuries to the fifth metatarsal, which have happened to several NBA players and other NFL receivers. The history isn't happy-making:

...one out of every three NBA players that required surgery to address a fifth metatarsal fracture suffered a second fracture or needed a follow-up surgery, including Durant, Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and Brook Lopez. NFL players, especially wide receivers are no stranger to the injury either, as Atlanta’s Julio Jones and former Giants receiver Hakeem Nicks have endured the injury in recent seasons. Every injury is different; but as Jeff Stotts guides us here, he notes, "Unfortunately the precedent set by these and other receivers doesn’t bode well for the Cowboys.''

Dallas has another example to consider having previously dealt with this type of injury. Last season defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence suffered a fractured fifth metatarsal during a summer practice and missed the first eight games of the season after being placed on the PUP list. The team initially believed he would miss eight to 10 weeks.

Looking at these examples, the four-to-six recovery window offered by Dallas appears to be a best-case scenario. Bryant, a fiery competitor, may be his own worst enemy, as rushing back from this injury could prove to be detrimental to his long-term health, especially given his injury history. (As we've noted in a Twitter conversation with FOX's Mike Garafalo, Cowboys medical personnel will need a straightjacket to keep Dez from pushing hard to get back on the field.

After seeing his reaction in the hallway towards his teammates I have no doubt Dez will do whatever it takes to get back at full strength as soon as possible. Just think of Rolando Mac but the opposite in regards to returning from injury and playing through pain

it's a month to 2 month injury. Fisher said it himself, "every injury is different". 4 weeks on the optimistic end for recovery - 8 weeks on the longer end. Safe bet is closer to 6 weeks. This would put him on track to return after the bye week @NY.

Barring something miraculous, everyone in their right mind knows the Cowboys will not rush him back after 4 weeks when there is a bye the following week.

Hoping for the best but every article says it's a jones fracture. And speaking to someone in the medical field this morning they laughed when I said "4 weeks." They also said "his full range of motion will be gone. "

Is the hyperbaric chamber that T.O. used to supposedly get healthy still utilized or not? Don't know if it would help Dez or Gregory...kinda doubt it.

Not true.
This frx has almost nothing to do with range of motion.
It simply needs to fully heal before weight-bearing stress is exerted, like lateral movements.
Of course, those cuts and spins and quick stops are the bread and butter for a WR, so they just have to wait and not come back too soon.
The Cowboy Docs won't let that happen and jeopardize the post-season.

You are correct it has nothing to do with range of motion. I am in nursing school while working in the Operating Room. ( saying that just so you know I'm not just agreeing with you)

Doc50 working here in the Bay Area I was told a story about Al Davis calling into a Operating Room at Stanford Hospital while a player was having surgery and saying while on speaker phone, Player X is needed in 2 weeks so you do just enough so that he is available I was told that story by 3 different people in Nursing

I would hold him out 10 weeks. Which is 9 more games. If we can play .500 ball over that window that would have us around 6-4 with 6 games to go. I can see 10 games winning this division.
