I think Garrett is excited for 2 reasons:
1. Will is an excellent receiver that will provide a deep threat to pull some safety coverage his way.
2. Allows Miles to play the slot more which is huge mismatch for the slot CB.
I think you hit the nail on the head. Most importantly I think what this allows us to do with Miles is the biggest. Covering Miles in the slot requires specific game planning. With Miles on the inside and a legitimate target on the outside, it quickly becomes a pick your poison type scenario. I think this is part of the reason why Laurent Robinson was so successful in a lot of games. Being a 4 legitimate option on offense completely opens things up. You can either keep the safety over the top to defend against the deep threat or you can let Miles Austin roam free and rack up yards after the catch.
I think putting Austin in the slot before was more difficult because on the outside all we had was Ogletree. I think that turned out to be a major downgrade for our team. Look at what happened when Ogletree had a good game though (against the Giants). Being that 3rd receiver, he had plenty of options available to him, he just wasn't consistent. When you bump up Harris, Harris is in the slot, and Austin is outside. Not quite the same effect.
Bryant^2 - Coale
Austin^3 - Harris^3 - Beasley^4 - Coale
Williams^3 - Austin^2 - Coale
I think we have some players who can really fit a role. And I think there will be competition. Beasley and Harris are going to really compete for that backup slot role, and a position as the 4th receiver in 4 wr sets. I think Danny Coale helps himself by being able to play inside and outside, but he still falls behind Williams on the outside.
