He turned that into even more players. Keeping up with this stuff can be exhausting.

The initial trade: Cowboys sent Steve Walsh to the Saints in exchange for the Saints 1st and 3rd round picks in the 1991 Draft, and their 2nd round pick in the 1992 Draft.

Subsequent moves:
  • 1991 - Cowboys trade the 1st Rounder from the Saints, #14 overall (RB Leonard Russell), to the Patriots for their 1st Rounder, #17 overall (DT Bobby Wilson), and their 4th Rounder, #110 overall (DE Kevin Harris).
  • 1991 - Cowboys trade the 1st Rounder from the Patriots, #17 overall (DT Bobby Wilson), to the Commanders for their 1st Rounder, #20 overall (DT Kelvin Pritchett), and their 5th Rounder, #132 overall (LB Darrick Brownlow).
  • 1991 - Cowboys trade the draft rights to 1st Round pick, #20 overall, DT Kelvin Pritchett, to the Lions for their 2nd Rounder, #37 overall (LB Dixon Edwards), their 3rd Rounder, #64 overall (OG James Richards) and their 4th Rounder, #108 overall (DE Tony Hill).
  • 1992 - Cowboys trade the 2nd Rounder from the Saints, #52 overall (WR Patrick Rowe), the Cowboys 3rd Rounder, #78 overall (LB Gerald Dixon), 6th Rounder, #163 overall (DT George Williams), the Broncos 8th Rounder (acquired in the Dave Widell trade), #222 overall (QB Mike Pawlawski), and the 12th Rounder, #329 overall (OG Tim Simpson) for the Browns 2nd Rounder, #36 overall (WR Jimmy Smith) and their 5th Rounder, #121 overall (OG Rod Milstead).
The End Result of the trade:

Cowboys trade QB Steve Walsh for:
  • LB Dixon Edwards
  • OG James Richards (cut in camp)
  • OT Erik Williams
  • DE Kevin Harris (lasted one season)
  • DE Tony Hill (released during second season)
  • WR Jimmy Smith (was released during second season)
  • OG Rod Milstead (traded to Browns during 1992 training camp)

No, you might want to check on what he got back when he traded Walsh (1st, 2nd, 3rd).

Who did we get with those picks, and is their cumulative value better than who we might have gotten (Cortex Kennedy or Junior Seau) had we not picked Steve Walsh?

EDIT: Nevermind, Plankton answered my question. :)

Jimmy Smith was cut after his second season and only after he refused to take a pay cut. He had an emergency appendectomy during the pre-season and later and an infection. This prevented him from playing all of the 1993 season, his second.

I noticed that as well. Someone wasn't interested in doing that much research before writing the article.

Don't worry about it I just dealt with a few posters who weren't interested in doing any research before submitting some posts. lol

Modern day journalism at its finest.

I was real young at the time but I swear the media was debating if we should go with Walsh or Aikman (and fans as well). Looking back, to think there was even a debate is mind boggling.

Why do the research when there's a deadline.

Jimmy the genius wasted a first rounder there

It worked out for the best the Cowboys got a #1, #2 and #3 in return and one of those picks ended up being Emmitt. Had they had the #1 overall pick in 1990 they would have ended up with Blair Thomas who Jimmy had rated ahead of Emmitt. What a disaster that would have been.

This is incorrect in multiple places.

Emmitt Smith was drafted in 1990 - same year that Walsh was traded. Smith was taken using the Steelers' first round pick acquired in a trade up with the Vikings' first rounder from the Herschel Walker trade.

Walsh was traded for the Saints' first and third rounders in 1991 and their second rounder in 1992. The bounty from those picks is listed above in another post I made.

As for if they had the #1 overall pick in 90, they had Junior Seau and Cortez Kennedy as their top two players on their board, so one of them would have been the pick, not Blair Thomas.

You're right I forgot Walsh was traded in 1990 however Jimmy was in love with James Francis in 1990 and tried trading up for him. He wanted Francis so bad he tried making a deal with Cinn after Cinn drafted Francis.

Jimmy did like Francis; however, that is because Francis was a realistic target at the time. Trading up to get either Cortez Kennedy or Junior Seau was not a realistic expectation. It would have required Dallas giving up a ton of picks to move up to get either guy. Had Dallas gone into the 1990 draft armed with the #1 overall pick then I don't think Francis would have been the choice. More than likely it would have been Kennedy.

Jimmy was in love with Francis he was the player he had targeted entering the 1990 draft unless you have a link that disputes it.

Actually I remember wanting Walsh over Aikman to start.Man, I don't know what I was thinking. Think it was the UCLA bias, never liked that school. Good thing Jimmy never asked for my opinion back then. Come to think of it, he still does not ask my opinion on anything even now. Some things never change.

I was liking steve beuerlein over Aikman for a minute lol

I found this.

Good stuff in there

- Johnson used the first pick in the supplemental draft to take the quarterback he won a national championship with at Miami: the un-Troy, Steve Walsh.

- Johnson had a plunger's chance to trade Walsh to New Orleans for a first-rounder, a second and a third. Johnson plunged.

- He basically told them that he had traded the wrong quarterback.

- Johnson said: "Troy Aikman was a loser in college, and he'll always be a loser in the pros."

Holy Cowboy.
