Five fascinating NFL Supplemental Draft picks

3. [URL='http://www.nfl.com/player/stevewalsh/2503524/profile']Steve Walsh. Walsh's selection by Jimmy Johnson in 1989 was curious for many reasons, not least that he had invested a first-round pick in quarterback Troy Aikman just weeks earlier. Johnson spent another first-rounder on Walsh, with whom he had won the 1987 national championship at the University of Miami.

Walsh actually won the
Dallas Cowboys starting job ahead of Aikman in his rookie season, starting five games -- including the team's only victory that year -- before being benched for the eventual three-time Super Bowl winner. Walsh was traded to New Orleans a year later and wound up playing for six NFL teams in an undistinguished 11-year NFL career.

Actually I remember wanting Walsh over Aikman to start.Man, I don't know what I was thinking. Think it was the UCLA bias, never liked that school. Good thing Jimmy never asked for my opinion back then. Come to think of it, he still does not ask my opinion on anything even now. Some things never change.

???
Walsh won starting QB...no, Aikman started, got injured, Walsh played until Aikman was ready to return.

I noticed that as well. Someone wasn't interested in doing that much research before writing the article.

Modern day journalism at its finest.

I was real young at the time but I swear the media was debating if we should go with Walsh or Aikman (and fans as well). Looking back, to think there was even a debate is mind boggling.

wow, I didn't know he hung around for 11 years, I never would have guessed he lasted that long

Not sure which is worse, that one or the Manning vs. Leaf debates.

Another writer who just made up a narrative. Aikman got hurt, and Walsh won the only game that year - a 13-3 victory over Washington. And we were wearing the blue jerseys. :)

Yep.

And Billy Kilmer was the losing QB to Walsh.

No wait..

It was Sonny Jurgensen..

No wait..

It was Otto Graham..

NO WAIT..

It was RGIII..

No wait..

it was Sling'n Sammy Baugh.

Never mind.

Manning/Leaf tells you all you really need to know about how much you really do or do not discover about players in the run up to the draft. And how much development, coaching, and experience can come into play. We tend to think it's just the players, but great players are made more than they're just born.

QBs in any era are subject to lots of doubts, scrutiny and wishful thinking. That instance was symptomatic of it.

Jimmy the genius wasted a first rounder there

Maybe. But I doubt we have Emmitt Smith if we didn't. Jimmy liked Cortez Kennedy, Junior Seau and Blair Thomas. I remember Jimmy saying he thought Blair was the best back in the draft. I doubt he would have passed on Kennedy or Seau but who knows?

Anyone with a brain knew to take Manning over Leaf. I didn't even think it was much of a debate back then.
