Following The Yankees' Lead, Dallas Cowboys Could Be On The Verge
by Stephen Clay

Cowboy fans, can this really be the year?

I'm not going to totally jump the gun on how far the Dallas Cowboys will go this season. In recent years, the team has looked strong in stretches but have faltered at year's end before flaming out in the playoffs, assuming they got there.

Racing to a fast 6-2 record with winnable games coming up against Green Bay, Washington and Oakland, the Boys could be looking at a six game winning streak heading into the home stretch. December has been a disaster for quarterback Tony Romo, but so far he has performed at a surprisingly high level, with better focus without feeling the pressure from Terrell Owens to throw him the damn ball.

Can this really be the year?

If there is any possible way to hold out hope that this is the year, then look no further than this year's version of the New York Yankees. Similarities between the Bronx Bombers and America's Team are eerie:

both opened up new facilities this year
both have maligned superstars who have suffered from past big game or playoff failures (Romo, Alex Rodriguez)
both teams are the most popular in their respective leagues with storied traditions

both have been without a world championship for a prolonged period
The Yankees overcame many of the areas that have held them back in past years, culminating into a World Series win over the Philadelphia Phillies. December and the probable playoffs will be the Cowboys moment of truth.

Looking Beyond November

Dallas will have a formidable task ahead of them to overcome their past.

Dec. 6th is a road game against the New York Giants. While the Giants have slipped in recent weeks, they will still provide a stiff challenge, especially in cold weather.

Dec. 13th, the San Diego Chargers visit Texas Stadium. The Chargers are expected to be playing for the AFC West and will play the game with urgency. With Phillip Rivers at quarterback and the trio of towers at receiver (Antonio Gates 6'4", Vincent Jackson 6'5", and Malcolm Floyd 6'5") the passing attack will be a tough one for Dallas' defense to contain.

Dec. 19th is back on the road, this time in the Superdome to play the New Orleans Saints. The Saints quite possibly has the most prolific passing attack since the "Greatest Show on Turf" teams in St. Louis a decade ago. Considering, chances are the NFC Championship will have to go through New Orleans, this will truly be a statement game for both teams.

Dec. 27th, at Washington Commanders. Who knows what kind of shape the Commanders will be in? But one thing you about the Commanders, they will want to knock off their rival regardless of the records.

The season finale, Jan. 3rd against the Philadelphia Eagles at home. The Eagles will be expected to be in the hunt for a playoff spot and will want to get revenge for the Nov. 8th loss at home to the Cowboys.

Dallas should be able to win at least three of their final five games. If not, it could be business as usual and the possibility of even missing the playoffs. But we won't think that way, will we Cowboy fans?

both teams are the most popular in their respective leagues with storied traditions

Without getting into any football discussion, because this thread is not about football but a comparision, comparing the Yankees storied tradition to the Cowboys is absurd.

I am not trying to ruffle feathers, there are just very few teams in any sport that should be held in the same regard as the Yankees when discussing American sports and tradition. Most football teams can not, and the Cowboys certainly can not, considering they are relatively new to the NFL.

disgusting comparison

1st it's the New York buy everybodies good players and free agents

2nd A-Roid is a cheater and had been choking his whole career up until this season(for like 15 years)

3rd Romo is only in his 3rd season

4th Jerry atleast tries. George just throws his money at the best players.

#5 I hate the Yankees

Dude you're flatout crazy. The Cowboys are definately in the same conversation as the Yanks when talking about storied franchises. The Cowboys are known around the world. Put the pipe down!!

Ok, I guess you can roam the world and put Staubach in the same conversation as Ruth, Mantle, Joe D, etc. Fair enough. [/sarcasm]

You can roam the world and mention the Cowboys period and folks will know who you're talking about. They weren't talking about specific players, they were talking about the brand of the franchise. The Cowboys are as well known around the world as any sports franchise.. Stop kiddin yourself.. You sound foolish..

There are a lot of media types thatwill try to make you believe that the Cowboys are not as popular as they have been in the past. That they are not America's team, like the Yankees are in baseball, or the Lakers in basketball. Do you want a barometer? Go to cbssportsline.com's NFL page. Look to the bottom right. It has each NFL teams forums and lists in order the most popular on down. The Cowboys are number 1 and have been number 1 for years. Some of the others change places; teams like the Steelers, Dolphins, and Packers, but one thing remains, the Cowboys #1. See as cbssportsline is the top fantasy football sight in the world, I think it's a good barometer to a teams popularity. The Cowboys are and always will be the Yankees of the NFL.

:laugh2: Exactly Mansta! Where does he get off saying that the Cowboys couldn't possibly be compared to the mighty Yanks? Oh well. Just look at his screen name... GMen86.

Sorry buddy, but the NFL is a premiere league. Moreso than the lowly MLB. Not to mention, the Cowboys are the premiere franchise in said league. So it is more than okay to compare a storied franchise in the Cowboys, to a storied franchise in the Yanks.

You can shred the Yanks all you want. It's not that important to me. I still maintain that if comparing the "storied" traditions of two franchises the Cowboys (1960) can not be classed with the Yankees (1903)

The original quote was "storied tradtions" not storied franchise, and yes I think that is relevant. It is a dumb article to begin with, to compare one team to another in hopes that it may bring you a championship. Reaching at it's best. But if your going to compare, make it apples to apples.

  • Dallas irrefutably has a worldwide sports recognition

I don't think any knowledgeable fan of the Cowboys (keyword being knowledgeable) thinks that a comparison article between the Yankees latest WS Championship and the Cowboys 2009 campaign is going to automatically propell the Cowboys into the Super Bowl in Miami..

...................................where we will play the Pittsburgh Steelers and win 34-21. LOL JK.

It's all in fun.

All the sudden "contenders" and Super Bowl talk makes me nervous. There's still half a season of hard teams and bad weather ahead. Kind of like to stay on a more even keel personally.
