people are saying, oh he does this dont want him on my team. For example chris henry, great player but got into trouble that shouldnt even matter if what he does on sunday is play. People go deep into players lifes and anything they do they will hold against them. Its insane i say if he shows up on sunday let him smoke all the pot he wants do drugs. its not our bussiness. Granted i do not condone drugs, raping pulling guns. But that is there personal life and should not be included with the players nfl life.

You can't depend on them being there every Sunday, teams pay out big money for a game and yes they have every right to expect a certain behavior and conduct from a player on and off the field and that include being involved with criminal behavior.

Exactly...what he said!!!!

I loved Michael Irvin, but he let his team down when he got himself suspended. Same with Leon Lett.

building a team has everything to do with character

that's the first building block, before talent

if a player smokes weed or parties a little hard, no one cares, but if a player beats his wife or has problems with authority, we should care

low character on your team = losses instead of wins

IMO the smoking weed is a knock against the character of a person.

Actually the league cares. It really does not matter our individual feelings about weed the fact is it is illegal regardless and if a player gets popped more than once he is looking at a 4 game, 8 game or 1 year suspension and teams can't afford missing key players who can't abide by the law. Is smoking weed as bad as beating your wife no but it is still against the law and is against league rules and as much money that is at stake for these players to do these things is just plain stupid.

It's not "just a game". Teams are representatives of the cities they live in. Taxpayers finance stadiums. Fans spend thousands of dollars on jerseys and season tickets. Players are payed 10x or more what an average person gets. We have every right to expect them to live up to the highest standards on and off the field. That's like saying politicians shouldn't refrain from getting oral sex from interns or giving out inappropriate backrubs.

Pretty easy to take a position like this when it's not your nickle. Teams invest millions in these players, not to mention the salaries of other players who depend on each other to succeed both on the field of play and from a financial perspective. If I'm considering paying this kind of money out, I'm going to be concerned if he appears to be a step shy of the State Penn. Perhaps I'm crazy but it makes all the sense in the world if I'm an organization to be very concerned with what goes on in a players personal life.

It is against the law, I agree it is no big deal but it does not change the fact that it is illegal. When I was young I would get into this argument with my dad all the time in the end he was right I got to figure that one out as I sat in jail for 30 days.

Character doesn't matter until it matters. That is typcially when things aren't going well. When things are great, character issues tend to be overlooked. Not so when a team is struggling. There were many more questions about character when Dallas was losing in the late 90s as opposed to when they were winning in the early 90s.

Character is also somewhat of a subjective topic. Some people care if players smoke weed, others don't. The league cares because they have a policy to test for it and will suspend someone for it. I don't think the league has a policy for guys that beat their wives or girlfriends.
